Owner description: In Soviet time Hotel Viru was good enough to accommodate foreigners. It also had to be good enough for the KGB ... The museum represents a collection of the stories of two worlds. In one of them, mostly existing on paper, happy Soviet people enjoyed a life of plenty and friendship, led by a single wise political party. The other world – the real one – had a nature much more diverse and complicated.

It was easy to book a visit to this small museum. The good guide told interesting stories and the history of the hotel and Estonia.

Located in the Hotel Viru the KGB museum is a 1 hour tour with the effervescent Jana, taking place on the 23rd floor of the hotel.
Tours in English are 8 Euros (6 for hotel guests) and must be pre-booked.
An amusing insight into the workings of the Soviet occupation of Estonia and the paranoia of the regime. Jana tells the story well with little insights into the recent past about the many rooms that were bugged including toilets.
Do not forget the photo opportunity in the KGB Directors chair and the RED telephone!!

This is not a museum, rather than former orginal KGB rooms opened for public. One should keep it in mind when visiting. For a former Soviet Union sitizen or anyone interested in USSR history it's an absolute MUST!

KGB-museum located within Viru-hotel has very interesting history, definitely worth visiting if in Tallinn. There's good guided tour available and this gives you very good briefing about Viru hotel and the KGB activities there. However, there is not that much to see in the actual museum, only one or two rooms with some old equipment.

Though small, the KGB museum atop the Sokos Hotel Viru is interesting. We went because our children were intrigued by it, but found ourselves equally so. The museum is located in just a few rooms, one in particular that was the central comand, if you will, of the hotel spying. Rooms and many devices were used to listen to guests staying in the premier Soviet hotel of the 70's. Every paper was counted or documented...When the KGB left one night, they destroyed much of what they couldn't take, but left enough behind to provide an interesting insight. Worth the price (18E for a family, 8E adults, 6E children) and the guide Jana is both informative and entertaining!
