Owner description: In Soviet time Hotel Viru was good enough to accommodate foreigners. It also had to be good enough for the KGB ... The museum represents a collection of the stories of two worlds. In one of them, mostly existing on paper, happy Soviet people enjoyed a life of plenty and friendship, led by a single wise political party. The other world – the real one – had a nature much more diverse and complicated.

Its not fantastic but in a city where there is little to do its a must... I suppose.

There guides are friendly and try their best to make it as interesting as possible with anecdotes but it isn't very big and to be truthful is only 2 rooms no bigger than your spare room.
The best part of the tour are the views from the top of the hotel.

***Make sure you book in advance!!!!!

Book in advance. It is at 11.30 and 14.30 in english. We got on a tour without booking, but it seems to be an exception. Takes about 1 hours. Lots of info from a guide, who lived in Estonia during the cold war, and has lots of knowledge about the era.

...just don't expect much. Perhaps that's part of the museum ... it's a bit ... Soviet. The bus tour we took was much the same.

Tallinn is a beautiful city, but it's past although interesting is somewhat more complicated than one might initially imagine. However, a trip around The KGB museum which is housed in Hotel Viru is a definite must to delve into Tallinn's history and what has made it the city it is today.

The KGB Museum although small is excellent and a definite stop on the Tallinn tourist trail. Make sure that you book well ahead for your tour as these can get booked up, we booked up through the Tourist Information in Tallinn. English tours run at 11.30am and possibly 2.30pm daily.

The tour starts at Hotel Viru, head to the KGB Museum desk in the lobby the cost is 8.00 euros for non hotel guests and 6.00 euros for hotel guests. The tour lasts approximately one hour. The guides are fantastic, their english and knowledge is excellent and their sense of humour brings a welcome relief to an otherwise serious topic.

Hotel Viru officially has 22 floors, although unofficially it has 23 and that's where you are headed. Although only small the museum is excellent full of historic photos, newspaper articles and a room left exactly how it was from 1991 when the KGB left Tallinn.

You can also go out onto a viewing platform and get spectacular views of both the old and new city of Tallinn from 23 floors up. Great vistas

Afterwards there is a ten minute film on Hotel Viru and the KGB Museum and a collection of memorabilia to purchase should you wish.

This is a fun, informative tour on a subject little known about in the Western world- a real eye opener.

Really enjoyed the tour. Guide told us many good stories. Not much there to look at but still good value. You also get fan static view over Tallinn.
Make sure you book onto the tours, it is also in the hotel, incase you stood outside looking lost.
