Meriton Old Town Garden Hotel

A well-placed, reasonably priced hotel in the centre of the Old Town. Reception staff were great. Helpful beyond normal. Garden room was big with an excellent shower room/W.C (discounts for seniors). Mini-bar not too expensive. Continental breakfast with extras such as scrambled egg and hot sausages and herring. Stick to the continental and the unusual herring. Great location for exploring but access to the Spa Hotel makes it even better. This is a brilliant Spa and not mcuh more than a10 minute walk. Steep stairs to 4th and 5th floor - not for the faint hearted. We didn't use the Restaurant as it is hidden away.Taxi from airport cost 7 euros one way and 8 euros return (10minutes).

aboutn 6 months ago we decided to plan a break in Tallinn for 14 - 19 July 2011, and after a lot of googling, we hit on the Meriton Old Town Garden as the ideal hotel. It was right in the heart of the Old Town, and also looked very nice. We were aware of at least 2 other Meriton hotels in the vicinity, but rejected these for various reasons. We arrived on the 14th to find they had no room for us and we had been reassigned to the Meriton Spa Hotel. They made it sound as if they were doing us a favour as it was higher rated. We stamped our trotters but got nowhere - there simply weren't any rooms. They couldn't explain why when we had booked several months earlier - it wasn't as if it was a last minute booking. What emerged was that this sort of thing happens all the time, and the staff there think it is quite normal. They also let on that some big Finnish travel agencies get priority treatment.

We kicked up a real fuss and demanded compensation. To cut a long story short, we were greeted in our room at the Spa hotel by a bottle of Cava, and we also managed to get out of them a free meal at their lovely Tapas restaurant at the Garden Hotel. We reckon all this cost them about €100.

The moral is - do not accept this cavalier treatment from them, and demand some compensation. If enough people do this, they will soon stop ignoring their customers' wishes for their own convenience.

Having said all that, our stay at the Meriton Spa hotel was fine - we've nothing against it except that it wasn't what we'd booked!

The Meriton Old Town Garden Hotel was the perfect stay
to absorb the spirit of Old Tallinn! How did the architects
build such a quaint multi-floored hotel with an elevator, too?!
The single en suite room was unique and very clean!
The breakfast plentiful and delicious! I would definitely return!

We visited Reval (Tallinn) during hot July days. We had read here that it is worth asking for a silent room since the noise from the court yard might be disturbing. So we did. We were happy to learn that we would get their biggest (30m2) room, which is also well protected from noise. And it wouldn't be too hot either, which is good as they don't have air conditioning and it was almost 30 degrees C outside.
Our room 001 was in the cellar with three small windows high up giving you a glimpse of peoples' legs on the street. It was indeed big, very nicely and recently decorated. However, it was moist and smelled like in a cellar. Looking at all open windows towards the court yard bar we decided that we were happy to stay for the one intended night. The noise on the street wasn't too disturbing either. And considering the heat outside the temperature was very nice indeed.
The disturbing smell was noticed when you entered the room, a few minutes after that you had adapted. It seems that they have three categories of rooms and this was the most costly one (119€ when booked the day before). There are many nice hotels in Reval, no need to return to this one.

Location is wonderful - less than five minutes to the centre square. And a quick walk from the Airport to City Centre bus (stop 6, I believe). About a 15 minute walk to Terminal D to travel to Helsinki.
Stayed in the economy room for two nights, small but really only there to sleep so it was good.
Breakfast was great, started at 7, wished it would have started at 630 but still good.
Staff was good, can't check in before 1400 but we were able to leave our bags in the lobby and go exploring.
Free internet!

Only dislike was that our room was above the courtyard to the restaurant and it was very very noisy until well after 2300.

This is a funky, original hotel in a very old building. This means that some rooms, like mine, are oddly shaped -- mine looked like a hallway -- but the fixtures are lovely, the internet rocks, and the staff are helpful. The breakfast is generous but I did hear some people complain there wasn't any cereal. No, but there was pickled herring and sour cream! Hello! You're in Northern Europe! My only problem with the hotel, which is minor, was that my room overlooked the courtyard restaurant which was often full of VERY loud, quite drunk tourists. Luckily I brought earplugs.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that does not face the courtyard.

Economy single room for senior. Price/quality ratio very good. Reception staff is professional and pleasant. Buffet breakfast is very good. Location could not be better. The room is small, but who stays there longer than necessary for a shower and a few hours sleep while being in the beautiful old town of Tallinn?
