Vilnius old town is not the main reason why you visit the city, but once you're there it's absolutely worth a visit. It's easy to walk around. There's plentiful of shopping opportunities and several nice cafes. Check out the nice chocolate shops. Some parts of the old town still needs some repairing, but the main routse have been fixed. There's lots of churches in the old town and even though you're not religious you should pay a visit to the many Orthodox churches that have lots of golden decorations and nice icons.

The old town of Vilnius is both charming and interesting. There are numerous shops and cafés to enjoy along with beautiful historic buildings and churches. There are various musical programs to enjoy at all times of the year.

You can find everything you need there: cozy restaurants, cafe, bars, night life, narrow streets, churches, small shops. Don't follow the crowd of the main street, turn to the left or to the right, and absorb the atmosphere of cozy old town of Vilnius. Go to Uzupis - it is not yet restored and has an authentic non manicured charm. Try to get into small inner yards.

We thoroughly enjoyed wandering through the streets of the Old City. A must-see stop along the way is the Upper Castle, located on the highest point of natural land in Lithuania. Pony up the 5 Litas entrance fee for the Western Tower of the Upper Castle, which offers the best possible bird's eye views of the Old City.

I'm not a big fan of museums and churches but rather just like to take in the architecture and environment of new places. Vilnius Old Town is just a wonderful place to walk around. In the three weeks we were in Vilnius, I found a new place to explore everyday (got lost a couple of times though never scary lost). But the best place I found was the park along the river that had recently been restored with the help of the EU. Great place to people watch! And when the new gardens mature, it will be a wonderful garden walk. The people were friendly - don't believe the bad press. We almost didn't go to Vilnius because of the negative comments we had seen in some travel guides. However, we found the people to be very friendly and helpful. I had read somewhere that business owners in eastern Europe are stand-offish at first but that the more you frequent their establishments the more they treat you like family. We found this to be very true!!
