The church and its shrine are located at the top of a street that runs uphill through the old city centre. I saw pilgrims heading for the shrine climbing the stone staircase on their knees as a sign of humility. It is one of th oldest churches in the city and famed for the vast number of thanks tokens pinned to the walls by pilgrims whose prayers have been answered.

This sight is located in old town, near one of the gates on the exit from this central area. You just go through the gates, rise your head up, and see the icon of Maria and Jesus. If you are in the old town, you can see it, it is just 3 minutes walking by foot. But I was not impressed at all.

Since this gate is the only surviving one from the old town and it houses a chapel that contains an icon of The Blessed Virgin Mary Mother of Mercy, said to have miraculous powers. It has become a pilgrimage site for many and it is quite beautiful. If you are inside the old city, there is a door on the left that leads to stairs that will take you up to the chapel.

I must admit to passing through the Gates of Dawn many times on my way into the Old City. This time I actually turned round and took a long look. It is the only remaining gate into what was the Old City of Vilnius and it is well preserved. It is interesting to take note of the many images above the Gates and , yet again, I was puzzled by the presence of the all seeing eye which seems to be everywhere from on a US $ Note to a Masonic symbol. A visitor should not fail to visit the Gates it is a remarkable door to the history of the city.
