I have spent a lot of time in Vilnius in the past two years and tried numerous hotels in that time, but for the last year I have been a resident at the Novotel chain hotel in Central Vilnius, the Lithuanian capital and I hav eto say - I'm impressed!

It's not a chain I think much about when travelling, but the team at Vilnius under the leadership of Frank Reul, the general manager of Accor in the Baltics make the experience special!

The hotel is kept immaculately clean, the bedrooms are great and again cleanliness means everything when you are travelling - never had an issue in many visits.

I would recommend this hotel to anyone staying in Vilnius.

Room Tip: It costs very little to upgrade and get a room on the 9th floor and ask for a view to the front - perfect way to see Vilnius lit up at night.

The receptionist was fluent in English and very helpful. We had a great room with a view. The complimentary bottle of wine for our anniversary was a pleasant surprise. The breakfast is varied and efficient. The coffee/tea making facility was an added bonus on some cold snowy days which we had. We could just relax in the comfort of our room on those days. We highly recommend the hotel based on its service and location.

Since all hotels are essentially a function of value, your experience at staying in one will depend upon the price you paid. I paid an average of Euros 50 for 4 nites, and at this price this is excellent value. Of course there are pros and cons, and of course this is a chain hotel so it s constrained by what they can or cannot do. But here goes:

Pros
1. Very good location within walking distance to almost everything. This time I was here with snow and cold outside, so it was a bit messy. But in spring and summer, it would be just perfect location.
2. Surprisingly good breakfast (better than the Radisson Blu in Old Town) that included some of the best breads I die for in Europe, including good croissants that are difficult in Lithuania.

Cons
1. Room is smallish (more like Ibis) and the bathroom is very compact even though it has a bath tub. They have also squeezed in a shower stall that is the size you find in cruise ships where you can barely stand. The faucet in the sink is placed very awkwardly on the wall.
2. The bathroom door is right next to the bed and opens very awkwardly.
3. This part of the world has some blazing internet speeds, but here it was just average. And of course, there is no charge for it!

This Novotel does not seem to believe in responding to guests reviews. So the reviews here are mainly for other potential guests looking to stay here.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the Square.

We stayed 4 nights. Very friendly, comfortable and spacious room. Breakfast choice was extremely good. We wanted a top floor smoking room and unfortunately as is often the case smoking room was only available on another floor with a different room spec. Whilst this was not a big problem maybe this should have been known to us at the time of the booking - my only qualm.

I would stay again - as very good value for moneyand the location was perfect for restaurants and walks round the old town

Room Tip: Ask for top floor with a view - check the room spec that you have booked - our 'superior' smoking room was not as good as the 'superior' non smoking which we were moved on to.
