“OK hotel”

Pleasant, comfortable hotel situated across the road from the Gates of Dawn leading to the old town. Handy location for that side of the city but a hell of a way from the far side. Fortunately public transport is cheap and regular. Bus station close by. If you're driving to hotel then you may have difficulty finding it. Up a side alley and only signed clearly from one direction. Even the police couldn't advise us where it was and we were only 20 yards away. The restaurant was closed while we were there, which was a disappointment.
There is a lot to see in Vilnius with some spectacular churches, but an absolute must is the Television Station. Visit the restaurant at the top and have a fantastic view of the city as the restaurant turns slowly round.

Vilnius, perhaps the most beautiful of all the Baltic Capitals, a pastel coloured vision of charming combined with dramatic architecture, and so very devout.

The white Gates of Dawn which form the entrance to the old town are one of its most holiest sites. The picture of the Virgin Mary which is in the chapel built into the gates is said to be miraculous, believers stop, bow and cross themselves before passing through the gate. Some of the more religious kneel in the middle of the street and pray. If you want a holy medal, set of rosary beads or an icon to take home there is a market just outside the gate which can cater for your every religious need.

Following the main street down towards the old town there are numerous ornate churches of varying denominations, mostly Catholic or Russian Orthodox and on summer Saturday mornings each one seems to be hosting the wedding of the century. Stretch limos, beautifully dressed brides with their entourage, and flowers everywhere.

Hot days with blue cloudless skies took away our inclination to visit museums so we only went to three in the five days we were there. Sadly the first two, the National Museum and the Higher Castle museum were ruined by the malevolent stares of the attendants, and so we dashed around not taking much in and left.

Museum number three, the KGB museum was a wholly different experience. It is both horrific and shocking, from the cupboard like holding cell, where the poor person who had just been arrested was kept, through his processing, to finally the execution cell it is a place of cold terror. You can feel man’s inhumanity to man with every step. But it is a place we should all visit if given the opportunity Lest We Forget….

Vilnius is crammed full of beautiful buildings, quaint cobbled streets, picturesque parks and gardens, children playing in the fountains, shady squares where couples sip their drinks outside cafes and bars, small markets where local traders try to part you for your cash and very cheap restaurants which serve delicious food at very very low prices. The local ice-cream is superb and with beer at 90p a pint, less outside the old town makes it a wonderful city to visit. The atmosphere is busy, happy and smoky, Vilnius is a haven for the persecuted smoker

We stayed at the Citygate, a charming hotel just outside the Gates of Dawn situated in a quiet courtyard. The gates to the hotel are locked at midnight and so it feels very secure. The breakfast was fine, with plenty of choice but the restaurant was closed in the evenings because the cook had left, but they were getting a new one in two weeks. The staff are sweet and very helpful, nothing seems to be to much trouble for them, and the rooms are spacious and spotlessly clean. This hotel is exactly as it presents itself on it’s website.

We had a great time there, we visited a flea market which specialises in soviet memorabilia, a restaurant Rojaus Arka, which was crammed full of Victoriana, we could have been in a late 19th century drawing room, and another Lokys where we ate beaver, it’s kind of porky and gamey. We had a fantastic trip in a hot air balloon which ended with a crazy ceremony in the middle of a field miles from anywhere and ate steak and chips at one in the morning. We went to the beautiful castle at Trakai. Saw the Karaite Kenessa and learned why their houses always have three windows facing the street, and we walked and walked and walked.

Would we go back ABSOLUTELY

I do have a few tips for future visitors

1.Taxis, get your hotel to telephone one for you and before you get in agree a price. If you think they are asking too much haggle, I laughed when one asked for 20 litas for a 12 litas journey and we agreed on 15. I just didn’t give him a tip, but he gave us the cd he was playing in the car because we admired it.

2.Hotels, our was lovely but it had one drawback it was at the top of the hill, so next year I will book one in the centre of Vilnius old town, i.e. the bottom of the hill. So we start the day ascending and complete the day descending instead of the other way round.

3.Try the local dishes, they are so cheap at around £2 for a main course and £1 for a desert and they are delicious if a bit stodgy.

4.We paid 79 litas each to go on an organised trip to Trakai, for that kind of money we could have used public transport and stayed the night, instead of being rushed around in a couple of hours. So do it yourself, have much more time and save a fortune, we will next year.

5.Buy the In Your Pocket guide as soon as you arrive, either from the kiosk at the airport, your hotel or the tourist information office. Also buy any others they have there for different places, they are a fount of information and after reading about some of the other cities you may find out you want to visit them too.

I hope this review has been of use to anyone thinking of visiting Vilnius, it really is worth it.

We stayed at the City Gate for 3 nights in early July 2005. We liked everything about the hotel.
The City Gate is within walking distance of the train and bus stations, both about 4 or 5 blocks away. Our room was waiting for us upon our 8 p.m. arriva. and we found it spacious, very clean, and quiet. Breakfast was buffet style, plentiful, and varied. The front desk staff were wonderful and full of recommendations for restaurants. Realizing we wanted to see nearby sites independently, they checked train and bus schedules for us to get to Trakai, a nearby destination.
The hotel is immediately outside of the old town, which is a good thing as we found that area quite noisy and trafficed.
We would definitely stay here again.

This is a great value especially if you are staying alone. The staff is friendly and helpful. I stayed in a comfortable quiet twin room with bath and tall ceilings. Great location on the edge of Old Town and a short walk from the Gates of Dawn. I'm not sure if they have non-smoking rooms but request one if they do. One of the twin beds had a slight cigarette smoke smell so I just slept in the other which was fine.
