We weren't going to go, but we are glad we did. Quite unforgettable recent history of oppression of Baltic people's by Soviet Union in particular. Probably not enough about Nazi oppression, although a few hints.

This is a superb museum and great thanks must go to the people who collated all the information that represents the horrors that belie so many of the Lithuanian victims. At the entrance to the museum is a lot of artwork done by local school children - some of this is quite disturbing when you see things through the eyes of a child. If you have a few hours to spare then this museum is a must for a trip to vilnius. It is a very somber museum but I guess there is no other way of telling the stories of so many that suffered. There are many comments and photos on here already and they pretty much sum the museum up.

This is something you really should see to try to understand the recent history of the Lithuanians. Exhibitions are very comprehensive and the dungeons quite disturbing.

Everyone should go here, at least once. Walking around Vilnius today, you'd be forgiven for thinking Lithuania's history was always peaceful and tranquil. Not so. It's worth remembering that the current period of independence only began in 1991 and for the 51 years before that, this small beautiful country was trampled on by two of the most stupid and nasty regimes in world history. For most of that time, it was the Soviet Union and this small, compact museum housed in the very place the KGB used to be based, is the perfect aide memoire.
