I can not say enough about this wonderful restaurant. WOW. Family owned in the heart of old town. Very convenient to the Dawn Gate. We arrived in Vilnius rather late on a Monday evening and a lot of restaurants were already closed, but we found this quaint, charming restaurant and were welcomed inside despite the late hour. The decor is very traditional with handmade curtains and murals. A large painting of a family dressed in medieval costume preparing to feast on a goose dinner is at table level so you kind of feel like you are eating with them. Later we found out that the people in the life sized mural picture are actually the owners and some of their friends in costume which was a fun fact. The food is incredible. All made to order fresh and mouth watering. Large portions and a very big menu. They use family recipes and secret herb ingredients directly from the owners' family. Try as I might, I was not able to crack the secret ingredient as they were all sworn to secrecy. Very friendly knowledgable waitstaff who made wonderful suggestions. The food and drinks came to the table fast and efficiently, especially considering everything is made to order. I highly recommend the homemade potato salad, viener schnitzel, fried spicy cheese, fish strips in beer batter and the assorted sausage plate. The house red wine was delicious and so was the beer. Our waiter, Roland was very kind and patient with all my questions regarding the dishes. He graciously explained how the dishes were prepared, step by step so I can hopefully try some at home. They sell some of the delicious sauces in their shop which was a bonus for us because we stocked up. Only once did we need google translate and one of the other waiters, who we found out later is the son of the owners, was quick to grab his smartphone with a smile and help. I stuck my head in the kitchen to give my compliments to the chef and the kitchen was immaculately clean and organized- always a good sign. The chef was very gracious with a big smile on his face and you could tell he takes pride in his dishes. We enjoyed ourselves so much that we took one of our friends back the next night and the food was even more delicious. Both nights they were full with a very diverse mix of businessmen, romantic couples, families and friends all seeming to enjoy themselves and the food. I would give this place a 5+ star rating and venture to say that no trip to Vilnius would be complete without dining at least once at this delicious culinary gem. A truly magical night.
