“For a walk”
Reviewed August 6, 2012

Laisvės alėja is nice place to take long, relaxing walk, but not so good for shopping/eating as due to central location shops there are overpriced. there are nice sights on the way if you take walk from begining to the end and it's free wifi zone for those who instead of enjoying this area just wants to surf internet. i personally believe that if was much more nice some years ago and now getting more comercialised. Place called 'Spurginė' (daughnuts place) is must-visit.

“Walking Zone”
Reviewed August 3, 2012

An outdoor shopping and cultural district free of automobiles, this is the old Nikolai Street, (or Prospect: its old Russian name.)

Liveliest part of town away from the medieval center.

“Past its prime but still alluring”
Reviewed August 2, 2012

Probably my opinion will be not really objective – I love Kaunas and Laisves aleja, with so many nice memories connected to it. In dry facts – it is a long pedestrian street, centrally located and connects with an old town artery Vilnius street so, that you have a „white cake“ – typical byzanthine nineteenth century orthodox church (now it is converted to a catholic one) at one end and „white swan“ – baroque town hall at the other. It is nice place to walk, have food, coffee/tea break, rest under the trees if weather allows. I am sorry to say though, that with idiotic decision to built a large shopping mall in Kaunas centre has ripped a lot of life from Laisves aleja and for several years it has been struggling to regain if not its former glory, then ant least some life. Still, there may be some attractions left. If you are interested in the architecture, especially of 20th century first half, you will find quite fascinating examples in Laisves aleja and neighbouring streets. Some of them are now in sad disrepair, but still bear noteworthy features: like Central Post Office, Pieno Centras (both in Laisves aleja), Lithuanian Bank (Maironio street), etc. There are numerous eateries there, some of them you will find advertised, but my recommendation is to try a small place called Spurgine (Laisves aleja 84, close to Musical Theatre). It may appear as typical cheap greasy-spoon bar-type fast food eatery, but it remains beloved nostalgia place for local people. It has changed very little since the time it was opened in seventies (do not get mistaken by coca-colas and hotdogs in the pictures at the entrance!). Food is eastern-European type pies with various stuffings (meat, sausage, cabbage, mushrooms, rice) and doughnuts. I recommend chicken stock (comes together with meat pie) and coffee with milk (forget about cappuccino, latte, espresso) and doughnut of selection. Healthy food- and calorie-freaks should avoid this place, naturally. One drawback – the ladies running and serving this place does not speak much English, but you will find English names in menu and doughnuts are displayed behind the bar.

“A long street,”
Reviewed May 19, 2012

This is over a mile long, with an avenue of trees in the middle, there are shops, restaurants, museums and bars the whole length with statues and a fountain on the way.
