The old town in Kaunas seems to be buzzing with people, morning noon and night! It's very picturesque with a museum and scores of restaurants, leading to the cathedral and the main square. A must if visiting Kaunas.

Kaunas Old Town is very small and dominated by bars and eateries. It's ringed by a busy dual carriageway with very fast traffic. On busy days it's difficult to appreciate the architecture as the streets are narrow, and apart from the inevitable souvenir shops and bars there are few shops. If you're expecting a 'mini Vilnius' you will be disappointed, but it's worth a visit nonetheless. Be prepared for obvious tourist attractions being closed on public holidays, especially religious holidays, and for museums to close unexpectedly. We visited on a midweek August morning to find that the museum, tourist information centre, and castle were all closed. There is extensive renovation work in many parts of the Old Town, which can make pavements difficult to navigate.

Kaunas is a little town with less people than in Vilnius, which makes it easier to visit. In fact, it used to be the capital city of Lituania for several years, and the inhabitants are really proud of this, and it gave to this city the opportunity to be so attractive. They kept a wonderful Old Town in which you can find a lot of churches, a main place, and lot of restaurants, bars and shops in the main street. It is not so big so you can visit it really fast, but it is worth seeing.

Beautiful, small historic town with lots of pavement cafes - perhaps not dissimilar to other such towns but what struck me about this one was how few tourists there were here. Every other similar town I have visited has swarmed with tourists but not here so that very much added to the charm for me (I was here on a beautiful July weekend). The one place that was not quiet was the Hotel de ville or Town Hall (known as the White Swan because of its large white tower) which is located in the Town hall Square. This building now houses a Ceramics museum in the basement but its main function on Saturdays is for weddings. Each wedding only lasts a short time so the square is full of waiting bridal parties and parked limos, wedding cars. If you like people watching, one of the pavement cafes offers a fantastic opportunity to watch the processions of wedding parties.
Other reviewers have mentioned the small size of the centre but one thing we did was go on the Hop-on-Hop-off bus tour. We stayed on for the full circuit ( 1 hour 20 mins : it was 2 euros cheaper if you stayed on for the circuit and didn't get off) and it was a good way to see the two funiculars and the parts of Kaunas which lie beyond the very centre as well as looking down on the rivers and bridges from above.

Many many many beautiful parks, churches, buildings and statues just waiting to be explored! Not to forget all the restaurants, shops and museums and of course art galleries that seemed to be quite many as well!

Not easy to go everywhere with push chair so we skipped too many places. On wheel chair the same of course. Streets are on a bad condition in places.

Lots of restorations in Old town so I think maybe getting even more beautiful in the future.
