Spent a cracking few days in Kaunus. Stayed at the Best Western in the Old Town. Plenty of bars cafes nearby to choose from and very inexpensive.

The Best Western Santakos is very well located for both the old town and the new town. Externally the building does not promise anything exceptional but once inside you'll be pleasantly surprised. The reception area is a little small but the staff are superb. They speak very good english (and no doubt a myriad of other languages) and are a credit not only to this hotel but to the Best Western chain.

Check-in was quick and efficient and within minutes we were in our rooms. I was travelling with a group of friends, nine in all, in a mixture of single and twin rooms. We were allocated rooms on the 5th floor. Being a converted building there is a little quirk in that for some of the rooms on the 5th floor you get out of the lift on the 4th floor and access your room from some stairs.

My room (501) was more than adequate, very clean and nicely appointed. Efficient air conditioning, TV with 3 english speaking channels, mini bar at reasonable prices, safe, wc & shower. The bed was very comfortable with nice soft pillows. All of our party said that their rooms were equally as comfortable. One minor gripe is that the shower in room 508 can be a bit difficult to use if you're over 5'8" because of the sloping roof.

Breakfast is served in the restaurant and is a plentiful buffet. A large selection of cold meats and cheeses and plenty of bread, fruit, cereals and yoghurts. It would have been nice to have a selection of fruit juices other than just orange but that's not worth making a fuss about. The hot food selection is very limited and will not be to everyone's taste but there's enough alternatives so that you can fill up nicely for your day ahead.

The hotel has a sauna and very small swimming pool, really more of a plunge pool to use after your sauna but you're not in Kaunas to swim are you?

The hotel is situated just a few minutes walk from the old town and its multitude of bars and restaurants. There is an underpass under the busy main road so the only traffic you'll encounter is the bicycles. You can be in the old town square in about 15 minutes. If you want to go into the new town then the shops are just a few minutes walk from the hotel. It will take you about 20 minutes walk to get to the Military Church of St Michael the Archangel. There are plenty of free maps at the hotel reception so there's no need to get lost!

Overall our party was very satisfied with the BW Santakos. The location is excellent and the hotel offers super value for money.

Room Tip: Avoid room 508 if you are tall.

We spent our second stay in this hotel in the last year this week-end and the hotel is still very good. Location is perfect, rooms are very nice and comfortable. Ths staff is nice but not extremely knowledgeable in terms of touristic information, a little training would probably help. Main weakness is anyway the breakfast : toasts but no toasters, coffee really bad. It's of course acceptable but not what you can expect from this type of hotel. But we definitely recommend this place in any case and would go back if we come back to kaunas again.

We really enjoyed our stay at this Hotel.

Our first impression was not positive, it seemed like the Hotel was in a dark and dingy street and we wondered where we had landed! However, the location is excellent, at the end of the road is the pedestrian street, where within minutes you are in the old town in the opposite direction is the main shopping street. (Reminded me of Las Ramblas, Barcelona). None of the streets seemed to be very well lit, but it was evident that there were always plenty of people about and it felt safe.

The Hotel arranged a taxi transfer for us which made life very easy. We had a corner room, which was spacious and very comfortable. (See pics) The level of service and advice from reception was very good.

Breakfast was varied, and whilst it was perhaps not exactly what you would expect for a UK four star hotel, for me part of travelling is the opportunity to try something new. We ate in the restaurant on the last night and enjoyed excllent wines and quality of food. My partner ate Beef Wellington, it was excellent and much cheaper than UK prices. The restaurant has a nice ambience and the small outside seating area is lovely. For good value I would recommend drinking the local sparkling wines.

We found this Hotel's beautiful building was atmospheric and the location was perfect for our stay. In the short walk into the old town there was a mini-supermarket; ideal for picking up bottled water etc. Within the hotel we receivd good service and had excellent facilities. As I said before, just choose this one, I believe you won't regret it!
