I was beginning to despair, having endured one bad eating experience after another in Kosice. And I am talking terrible! I can't begin to describe some of the atrocities perpetrated in the name of food on the streets of the second city of Slovakia. But then, right under my nose on the main street, I discover Le Colonial. It may not join the great culinary experiences of the world but this place is good. Someone in the kitchen knows how to cook: fish is always a good test and their Fillet of Zander I had on two visits and each time it was perfect. Then I tried the salmon and it fell away in succulent flakes onto my fork. Everything is yummy although the desert menu leaves a little to be desired but you can't have everything. And it is not over-the-top expensive. Three courses, with wine, will be about €30. The staff are friendly, which is also a plus in Slovakia, believe me (customer service hasn't really taken on in Kosice) and the ambiance bright. There is also an outside covered area that is fine for summer, if a little claustrophobic because it is wedged into the courtyard. Not only worth a visit but an oasis in this culinary challenged city.
