Owner description: Located a few miles west of Bratislava, this castle was once part of the Roman border in the first century A.D. and later became the seat of the Great Moravian Empire and a strategic post during the Turkish Wars.

Devin Castle is an optional half-day trip from Bratislava. It can be reached by Bus No.29 from the bus stop below the bridge. Tickets are 0.90 Euros each way and the journey is less than half an hour. There is an uphill walk to the ruins and entry tickets are 3 Euros. The views from the top are spectacular but the castle is in complete ruins. Renovation activities in the upper castle were in progress at the time of our visit. The location is also the site of the confluence of the Danube and Morava rivers. Devin Castle was historically part of the Roman Empire Vanguard line It was destroyed by Napoleon's armies in 1809

Took a boat from Bratislava port to Devin castle. Its a leisurely and enjoyable one and a half hour trip down the river. Devin castle itself has been preserved well, and the work that has gone into restoring so far has been excellent. There are english translations, and toilets and drinking water at the top. You will not be able to visit part of the castle as it has not been restored yet, as the funding to complete it has run out for the time being. The area surrounding the castle is very green and it is nice to get out of the city and see the Slovakian countryside. All in all, a very pleasant afternoon excursion from Bratislava.

Unfortunately the upper castle is currently closed, due to lack of funding for essential repairs, which is why it only gets 4 stars, but I can highly recommend getting here if only for the views.
We went on a very rainy day, but when the rain cleared the views from the castle walls were stunning. The grounds are full of things to find, and the sheer wealth of history make it somewhere to appreciate and enjoy.
As others have said, getting here by bus is easy, just make sure to double check the bus times before setting off.

Rainy day in Bratislava so went to Bratislava Castle but closed due to visit by European heads of state. Jumped on 29 bus and for 90 cents soon at Devin Castle, perched high on a rock overlooking flooded Danube and Moravia rivers. Imposing ruins, perhaps a little over- restored, set out in beautiful grounds with the most spotless toilets I have ever visited ! Bus back to city every hour - and an hour is just about right to see the castle and take a few stunning pics of the surrounding countryside.

catch the x13 bus from the main station(or on route)to the EUROVEA shopping mall.Change to bus28 (buy 2 tickets at bus stop one for outward to Devin and one for return cost 1.80 euros.Note:when you get off coming back you catch the X13 at the same bus stop that you got off the bus 28.When you arrive at DEVIN village there are no signs to indicate where the castle is.I suggest you cross the road and turn left behind the bus stop for going back to Bratislava. There is a long flat winding road towards the castle. You will arrive at a hotel/café complex with outdoor seating situated below Devin castle. It was pouring with rain when I arrived and there was no one around.spookey!Walked from the cafes towards a path leading up to the castle came to a ticket booth and bought a ticket for 3euros half price for children, oaps, students.I walked through the beautiful grounds up a winding gently rising path towards the brooding castle with lightning flashes/rain and thunder. It took only 20 minutes to go around the ruins as half the castle is closed for repairs and restoration. The views of the Danube below and the general countryside was magnificent so spent another 30 minutes taking photos. It was spookey though! I was there on my own.Eventually walked back to the hotel below had a delicious cappuccino and reception informed me there was a bus back to Bratislava in 17minutes.A gentle walk back to the bus stop and I noticed there was a little shuttle bus waiting but it did not stop in a place I knew in Bratislava so decided to wait for the 28 bus which came shortly after.I would suggest half a day is more than a enough for a visit unless you plan a picnic.
