The Benedictine Abbey is a must see for any lover of Hungarian History. Before you enter the museum make certain you watch the introductory movie (about 15 minutes long) that describes the history of the Benedictine Abbey (in English).

When you see the pictures of this abbey, you can´t imagine how impressive it is. The façade looks plain and simple, but it´s quite the opposite once you cross the gate. No photograph can capture all its baroque splendor, for you can only shoot a fragment at a time.
If you go to lake Balaton, don´t miss this beauty.

We were fortunate to have friends that were living in Hungary who took us to Lake Balaton. The lake is beautiful and a must see. When we visited the lake the ferry service was operational so they took us to the Tihany peninsula. While we were there we went to the Abbey and the museum. Both were pleasant and it helped to have locals that could explain with further detail what we were viewing - some interesting history. Take some time to eat some ice cream while viewing the lake. Very relaxing place...

This is an historic church and friary in an exquisite position on the hill of Tihany peninsula, overlooking lake Balaton, and one the real landmarks in this area. The building can be seen from miles around, and there are beautiful views of the limpid Lake Balaton from the terraces around the church. As historical monuments are rather scarce in this area, hordes of tourists visit the old village of Tihany and the church in high season. When I last visited, there was a rather excessive entrance charge to visit the inside of church, which I find somewhat objectionable - churches are public places of worship, and the treasures in them, accumulated over the centuries, belong to the people and should be be open to all. The Hungarian Catholic church is far from poor, possesses huge properties, and milking tourists in this way is just plain avarice. In any case, the inside of the church is not really worth seeing - just the usual barock interior like hundreds of other churches in Central Europe. Visit the outside of the church, enjoy the views, and walk around the historical streets of Tihany village (alas, now full of all kinds of stalls selling the usual garbage to tourists).
