Owner description: A historic village with many original buildings and objects representing Hungarian architecture and culture from the end of the 18th century to the middle of the 20th century.
Reviewed July 14, 2013

We have been to more interesting Open-Air Museums in other countries but the Hungarian houses and displays were interesting for non-Hungarians. Each is well furnished with interesting artifacts. We spent an interesting 2 hours here but we were a little disappointed in the museum layout. We had to walk a long way between each village and so did not view the whole area. As it was not a "special" Sunday there was no train running on this day as stated in another review and there were few demonstrations. The Information Centre in town will give details of buses as it is 3 km out of Szentendre. In July 2013- Buses left the bus station near the Train Station at Bus Stop No. 7. HUF450 return. Weekdays 8.05, 10.35, 13.05, 14.05, 15.05, 16.05, 17.05. Weekends 8.05, 10.35, 12.30, 14.25, 18.25. Returning at Weekdays 10.46, 13.28, 14.28, 15.28, 16.28, 17.28. Weekends 8.17, 10.47, 14.48, 16.48, 18.48. Do not miss the bus as we could not see any other way to return to town other than walking. This museum is not recommended for the elderly or those with small children. Szentendre is a quaint village to visit and certainly worth the trip out of Budapest. We went on a Sunday so there was plenty of atmosphere. It is recommended that you go by boat and return by train. This way you are free to return when you please. The boat leaves at 10am NOT 10.30 as stated in previous review from Pest (Vigado Square) and Buda (Batthyany Square)and returns at 5pm. 2000HUF One way. 1 hour 30 mins. Train returns to Batthyany Station every 20 mins. It takes 45 mins.

And not only for Foreigners, but also for Hungarians.
This is an open air museum, where the finest samples of the Hungarian rural architecture of the 17-1800's have been built up again (these are not replicas, but the original houses have been brought here!).
The entire area shows various districts of Hungary, from where the tyipical species were taken, and give a good understanding of the Hungarian architecture of those times.
The houses are furnished, and skilled guides explain you the most interesting details of that building.
In some "districts" houses of different businessmen are shown, and their daily life, and their "kill" are also demonstrated (from honey-producers to shoemakers, from traders to producers of wine).
On major eventy (like Easter) several dancing groups give a presentation, different professions (from bakers to lace-makers) present their production.
In case you want to learn more about Hungary, than good eating and drinking - this hald a day program (includied the travelling) is highly recommended.
ASK FOR THE SKANZEN -as the OPEN AIR MUSEUM is widely known.

I am officially qualifed as tour guide of Hungary and I am really commited to have a chance to take my guest to Szentendre Open Air Museum! Great Service! Lovely and knowledgeable guides at the sites! They are expert in the topic!!!! Just you HAVE TO ask them! They do not want to be pushy. :) Their command of foreign language is also excellent!! Be brave and ASK!!!
I want to say a speical thank you for our beloved "miller" at the wind-mill. He is great! Greeting toward him from Csemő! :)
You have a chance to learn a lot about the Hungarian countryside! If your time permits do not miss it!
If you come again and keep your previous admission ticket you can get additional 30% off. You can also use ur own bike around the area of the museum. You can prepare your own soap/candle/rope/gingerbread etc... without any additional service see. It is worth to do it!

I've visited Skanzen a few times with both my family of 4, and also as part of an elementary school field trip, and have been pleasantly surprised both times. The area is beautiful, and the history of Hungarian culture from days gone by is so fascinating. Great place to let the kids run and play and explore, and the smell of fresh baked bread will leave your mouth watering for sure! The villages are so lovely, and the petting zoo was a big hit with my two girls. A great family outing just a few miles outside of Szentendre.
