“Impressive cathedral”
Reviewed November 8, 2013

The Votive Church in Szeged is one of the main attractions of the town. It's placed on one end of a large square, where they have summer theater events every year (you should visit a performance is you have a chance). The church itself is not an old one, but it has an atmosphere to it. The walls are not marble covered, but the style and the paintings have some oriental touch. We have visited a mass and the feeling was not much different from that of any famous Gothic cathedrals. If you are in Szeged you should go and visit the the church.

Reviewed October 14, 2013

Inside and out it is a beautiful building, even thou I am not a church goer per say, I enjoyed looking around. Surprisingly the church is not as old as it looks and feels like.

“Colourful interior”
Reviewed January 27, 2013

The church with its impressive size, interesting brick architecture and colourfully painted interior is a must if you are in Szeged. The large square in front of it with the colonnades offers a nice view. The interior paintings are influenced by Byzantine style, and the Virgin Mary in traditional local dress painted on the ceiling above the altar is also special. The organ is also impressive. It's a pity that the towers are only open occasionally of for groups...

“take a good look around”
Reviewed August 9, 2012

You will find many strange things in this church!
#1: there are swastikas and other Hindu symbols adorning the walls
#2: there are clearly drawn hexagrams on the crowns of saints. These are always situated directly across from saints wearing the cross on their crown.
#3: The church is large and has the third largest organ in Europe but the entrance to it is from a small opening at its side.

These obscure, unconventional aspects lead one to believe that the designers wished to clearly join the camp of those Catholics that at the turn of the 20th century already identified the threat from the enlightenment movement and that the reformists were gaining in popularity in Hungary. They probably wished to make a few statements by including these rather unconventional characteristics to this Church. I suggest you go there yourself and find out more!
