“Out of season visit”
Reviewed October 11, 2013

This is the 2nd time we have visited Lake Balaton, both times out of season, so everything was closed up. The Hotel was open, but deserted. The receptionist was the most depressing young lady ever, and took an age to book us in. Most of the downstairs of the hotel was in darkness which gave it a depressing feel. The Manager was most helpful, even going to the effort of showing me how to get back into the hotel if we went out via rushing outside to demonstrate how the key card worked (I don't speak Hungarian, and he didn't speak English).
The room was moderate in size, but had a small balcony with a view across Lake Balaton. The balcony had an electric shutter, which automatically closed if you left the room. The room was nicely decorated, but only had a shower. No coffee making facilities in the room, but according to my partner, Hungarians don't do kettles ! There is Internet in the room via a cable, which you pay a deposit for. As I had an iPad, and my partner had a computer, I had to sit in the darkened ground floor of the hotel to pick up the wifi - which was not very good. He got to lounge in the comfort of our room on his computer :(. The room was very clean.
I was woken up at 6am, by the next door hotel cutting grass that did not need cutting. The chap just seem to be driving round and round for the hell of it. I was not amused.
Breakfast was included in the room price. We had not enquired what time it was served. But as soon as we exited the lift, the Manager instructed the receptionist (a different, more friendly young lady) to assist us with breakfast. The coffee was good. The cold meat served to my partner was off! There was cereals and juice, but I declined after my partner's experience.
The Manager came to advise us that the hotel's pier was open, so we took a quick wander to the Lake edge. Seems that you can walk a long way out and the water remains very shallow (great for kids).
I would imagine that in season, this is a good Hotel. It's location is fantastic, right on the lake's edge.

Room Tip: The swimming pool is very noisy so try to a avoid a room overlooking it.

The hotel has *** -and it complies to this criteria.
One has to know, Balaton is the largest sweet-water lake in (Central) Europe, and the water, and the sand is really sweet.
The southern shore is a shallow one, -you can walk hundreds of meters until it reaches the depth of 2 meter, thus ideal for families with small children.
Traditionally Siófok was the place for low-medium class travellers, for entertainments and events.
(Balatonfüredi was more for the upper class, while Zamárdi rather for families).
Siófok remained ike this, and if you are looking for more fun - this is the place.
The Hotel Balaton (one of the "luxurious" hotels of the 60-ies built in Siófok) got a face-lift in 2009/2010.
It was designed by a *** interior decorator, was made in a rubbed-down hotel of the 60-ies, with ***financing and with ** star staffs.
The rooms fully fit to this category, have air-con, abd cable TV.
The location (for the above expectations) is the best in Siófok.
If you are not against a non-professional staff, and book in advance on the internet at 50% rate of the list price (Aas we did) -you made the right decision!

We spent 3 nights at the hotel in connection with the swim race across Balaton lake. We were a bit put off by the negative reviews of this hotel but it was difficult to find anything else which was not rediculously priced. The family room (apartment) was fabulous. It was a room but like 2 boxes connected with a small entrance way and entry to small well appointed bathroom. So the described 20sqm were not at all too little space. Everything was new and functioned really well. The 'master' box had floor to ceiling windows with marvelous views across the lake. There was a flat screen tv in the other 'room'. The beds were great and the AC functioned really well. There were electric shutters which would go down every time the room was exited and that assisted to keep the room pleasant, because it was some very hot days. The hotel wifi did NOT reach to the 5th floor.
The room was very high standard and the rest of the experience a disappointment. The restaurant is so dark that it is hardly inviting not even for the included breakfast which we did not touch any of the days. Communal bread (!?!) was put on the long tables for you and fellow guests to enjoy, the buffet looked very sad and unappealing. The coffee you would have to queue up for and then pay additional for as well... This whole experience strikes you as something from a different time! Same goes for the housekeeping. There was NO cleaning of the room in the 3 days (no one told us this) and towels could be changed but no one came to change them, apparently you had to find the lady who could change them... So be careful keeping your room and towels tidy..
We wanted to spend some time on the socalled beach for the hotel. Actually the hotel is fenced off from the beach (not a real beach but more like a shore edge) and the access to the water is from a jetty. If you want to lie on sun loungers there is some grass bordering to the fence to the water (presumeably the (pay) beach next door owns the strip of actual waterfront in front of the hotel!), but beach access from the hotel is a big word. Water access..

I would choose this hotel again definitely because of the lovely room. That room (apartment it was called) was outweighing the rest of it. Eat and do activities elsewhere and just go there to sleep, then it works!

Room Tip: choose the apartments with direct view to the lake.

The hotel had a massive renovation in 2009 and it looks great now. Unfortunately we have had some problem with the AC as well - actually on the whole floor but with the practical shutters we have managed to cool the room down.
They have a secured and locked car park next to the building and even the waterside has taken over by the pay-beach, they still have a small pier to sunbathing on. All the rooms have balcony with lake-view and small sitting area.
The staff was helpful - but in the morning there was only one girl preparing the breakfast and clearing after the guests, so I had a feeling they are short of people there.

We stayed at the hotel in August 2007. There was NO air conditioning and it was very hot and humid. If you opened the window to get fresh air at night, you had better have the lights off, or you would have thousands of bugs come to visit. The room was beautiful though, and the service very good. The food was fair, and some of the advirtised services were not avialable, ie, nail services. I would advise NOT visiting in the heat of the summer or bring your own fans.
