Owner description: Sopianae, predecessor of Pécs in the Roman times had its late Roman Paleochristian cemetery included in the UNESCO World Heritage list in the year 2000. In their architecture and wall-paintings the excavated finds present the Early Christian burial architecture and art of the Northern and Western provinces of the Roman Empire. From among the Hungarian world heritage sites the Early Christian cemetery is the only one that has won itself a place on the UNESCO world heritage list in the category of culture-historical architecture.

“One of the best archealogical sites I've seen”
Reviewed October 1, 2012

This visitor center is excellent. These excavations are rather recent (early 2000's). The center walks through a main area with information, followed by metal staircases and ramps through and over various sites including fascinating crypt constructions. A guide is recommended--to get the most from the site.

“Nicely restored”
Reviewed August 20, 2012

Usually I am not very much into archeological sites but this time I enjoyed the experience. They did a very good job, the exhibition is worth visiting.

“Christian Burial Tombs”
Reviewed June 24, 2012

I was disappointed. They were displayed to their best advantage, but really there is not that much to see. There are loads and loads of burial tombs at Pamukkale in Turkey which give an idea of how they once looked, but do not let you see inside them. If it's hot outside, then cooling down by seeing them is not a bad idea.

“Interesting”
Reviewed May 3, 2012

I had a lot of difficulty finding the entrance to the tombs, but I'm glad I found them! It was very interesting and there were a lot of signs in English and German, as well as in Hungarian. If you are a history lover, this is a must!

“Interesting to see”
Reviewed April 17, 2012

Reminded us of some of the burial tombs we saw in Turkey. Interesting perspective, nicely developed and presented; reasonable entry fee.
