Tokajer Pension
Reviewed August 28, 2011

We spent seven days in this pension. It's oriented mostly on german turists, so communication in english is hard or even impossible.

The good thing is, there are three small swiming pools, whirpool, gym, infrasauna and first of all at least twenty bikes to lend, all included in the room price. Especialy bikes we used several times and it was very convenient. Good breakfast.
The room was not big, but thats fine, we used it only for sleeping anyway. Lying in bed, you could hear running water just behind your head when somebody in the other room flushed the toalet or used the shower.

Now the bad thing - around 100 euros disapeared from the wallet we left in our room. We are quite sure about that, because in the pension they don't except credit cards and we had the exact amount in euros to pay our stay (otherwise in Hungary you use forints). Since the room was locked, I guess it was the cleaning lady who improved her family budget and who thought that few missing bills will stay unnoticed. When I told the owners about it, they looked very offended and refused to discusse it at all, propably thought it was some attempt to fool them. Ofcourse it's impossible to prove such thing and 100 euros is not a huge ammount. But to be robbed and than to be looked at as a fraud realy isn't something that improves your vacation.

So, when you are about to visit this pension, I'd recommend hiding your cash well.

You have free bikes to rent, billard (gotta pay), free whirlpool, 2 tiny tiny swimming pools (for kids), good breakfast (muesli, corn flakes, bread, vegetables, cheese, ham etc). Good tea! It is very close to the train station.

However, it is very difficult to communicate with the reception. They speak in German, and have a very poor level of English. The pension was full of German tourist (might be a little bit annoying because almost all had kids and the walls are paper-like unfortunately).

The rooms are dated, poorly furnished but the bathroom was practical (despite lots of hair on the floor). Do not forget to bring shampoo, because they do not supply shampoo, only hand soap.

The town is spooky after 9 p.m! And there is no way to communicate with candy-like cleaning ladies, though they were very helpful and candid.

Room Tip: the ones away from the main street!

This is not the place for an overnight stay as we had booked. We could not make use of all the facilities provided - pools, bikes, gym. It is located in a quiet location - walkable distance to the city centre, lake and station. Alternatively you could use the bikes or drive - car parking on site. Our room was clean and well equipped - even a small balcony with a couple of seats. There are no lake views.

We were really impressed by Tokajer Pension when we stayed there in June 2009.

The main thing is the fantastic range of facilities - there's an indoor and 2 outdoor pools, jacuzzi, steam room, sauna, gym, table tennis, table football, pool, and free bike hire (huge range of bikes all in excellent condition)

We only stayed two nights, so didn't get the chance to make to most of this, but we thought the bike hire alone made the hotel fantastic value (it's easy to spend 10 euros plus on bike hire per day)

The breakfast buffet was excellent - a good range, which we took out on the front terrace.

Our room was basic but spotlessly clean. Good shower, fridge, and TV, plus a small balcony with seating.

Potential downsides? It's a little outside the town centre, but still walking (or cycling) distance from everywhere. Plus there's free secure parking onsite, so easy to come and go by car.

Overall, fantastic value. And with Keszthely so well located for exploring Balaton, you can't go wrong. We just wish we could still fly to Balaton Airport...!
