Owner description: Built in the first half of the nineteenth century, the largest cathedral in Hungary incorporates the red marble Rakocz Chapel, a fine example of Renaissance art.

The building is huge and very very impressive.

Start with a walk around it, and buy the ticket that enables you to view everything.
Then don't you miss the top of the dome, and take a good look around while there.

This building is truly something to behold.

Esztergom is the old capital of Hungary and we stopped there on a cruise down the Danube. It is worth a stop or a day trip from Budapest, as there are so many fewer tourists. It's a relaxed city, commanded by the Basilica overlooking the river. The pedestrian zone of the city is enjoyable to stroll.
It's a 10-15 minute hike up the hill and the ticket office is in a small building adjacent to the entrance, or you can take a cab up from the village. The all-inclusive ticket is pricey, all except the crypt are worth the cost. If you climb to the top you'll be rewarded with 360 degree views of the river valley. We had a bright, sunny day and it was spectacular.
The crypt is unremarkable except for one sarcophagus, not worth the walk down in my opinion.
On a nice day, the grounds are beautiful, lovely flowers and trees, with benches to rest along the way.

A huge basilica on the top of the hill with a beautiful view down to the Danube. Inside the basilica the Bakócz Chapel made of red marble during 15-16th century. The Royal Palace museum beside the basilica was partly closed because of new excavations.

The trip to the Esztergom Roman Catholic Basilica in Hungary is well worth the long ride. As you enter the valley you begin to see the dome from a distance. As you get closer the fulll structures comes into sight. When you finally arrive you are overwhelmed by the size of the structure. Fortunately, there was an elevator available to take you from the parking area to the first level. There are two souvenir shops, one at the entrance and one in the rear of the Basilica. You should go to the one inside the Basilica, as the assortment of religious items is nicer and you have more materials on the history of the building to select from. The size of the nave is impressive as is the organ and sculptures. It was very peaceful inside. The gardens are not to be missed. You need more than the alloted 30 minutes by the topur guide to really enjoy the Basilica and the grounds.

I took a day trip from Budapest by bus to go to Estergom. If you go by bus, there are many, pretty much on the hour, but get there 15 or so minutes early because you'll stand otherwise. I did eventualy get a seat after 45 minutes or so. The trip is hour & half. I walked to the basilica from the station. A nice 10 -15 minute walk. There is a pretty little plaza on the way - a good place to stop for a coffee.
The edifice is most impressive. The dome is massive. The museum was closed today a Monday, but I was mostly interested in the grand basilica. I paid to go to the cupola. It was 400 steps up but worth it. The view of the Danube, overlooking the Slovak border is grand. After visiting the church I walked over the bridge to Sturvo, Slovakia - nothing great but just an interesting change.
