I've been here a few years back for a short trip to Hungary. The castle had lovely surroundings and it was a very nice place to be. Our guide was very knowledgeable and recommended few nice places to eat too! Eger is such a lovely place.

The main square, the road to the castle and then the castle itself... all in mud and in reconstruction.... Looks nice, though...

If you travel the trains in the Hungary, it's possible that you will come across the phrase "The Stars of Eger." What does this mean? In Eger, you have the opportunity to stroll the castle walls that play such a role in Hungarian legend. In the legendary siege of the Eger castle in 1552, Hungarian troops of about 2,100-2,300 held off an Ottoman army that numbered 35-40,000 men from the Rumelian army (and an Anatolian contingent) and the troops of Ahmed Pasha from Buda. Despite the expectation of an easy victory, the courage of the castle's defenders, as well as inspired leadership repulsed repeated Ottoman assaults. Unfortunately for the Hungarians, the fortress of Eger capitulated in 1596 to a combined force of Ottomans and mercenaries.
The scene now is much more peaceful. From the walls, you have a wonderful view of the provincial capital. You can see the northernmost mosque existing in Hungary, not far from the castle walls. There is a small charge to enter the grounds & walk around, but it's worth it.

If traveling to or just passing through Eger, a guided tour of the Egri Var is a must! You'll have a good understanding of the medieval history of the castle.

We weren't sure if we missed the ticket entrance or it was closed but wandering around the grounds of "Hungary's Alamo" granted us with great views of Eger and the ruins of a 10-11th century chapel. If you're in Eger, definitely recommended!
