You have to looking forward another hotel :-) It was terrible! Very old furnitures in rooms, and my main problem was the missing air conditioning, it is unbearable on hot summer days. The foods are poor, not operating coffee machine, late or missing food resupply, chaotic parking system, complicated accessibility of the hotel, often noisy rooms, and the family apartments views are intolerable. I do not recommend to anyone...

Rooms are very functional, quiet; beds are surprisingly comfortable; breakfast is enough to skip lunch. Tired hotel, but terrific location and tons of history. Nice surprise after seeing some of the critical reviews here.

Room Tip: There are corner suites available, a nice, comfortable shared room with good bathroom, plus one bedr...

We heard that this was once the most famous hotel in Hungary- sadly once is the key word. It has been neglected for so long that it is no longer a comfortable place to stay.
We were visiting Debrecen from Budapest as part of my husbands birthday celebrations. The write up on late rooms was quite good saying the hotel had a spa and a lovely buffet breakfast.
On our arrival we discovered the spa was closed- probably for the best because it would have been very badly maintained I'm sure. The rooms were large , filled with old mismatched furniture. The beds were clean as to were the tiny en suite bathrooms. The TV's had 12 inch screens! And the room walls were so thin that the people next door knocked on my door at 11pm and told me to turn the TV down!

There were no staff anywhere except on the desk, It felt disserted and rather creepy in the large corridors.
The breakfast was truly vile- with a plate of salami and cheese just put on a table with a few bits of pepper and tomatoes and to our horror flies were walking all over the food!
My children wouldn't eat anything. The roof was leaking and dripping onto the breakfast food table. It was disgusting.
Do not stay there.
We did manage to cancel our remaining 2 nights and the girl on the desk gave us 10 % off.
She was very embarassed.

This hotel looks great from the outside, but what a disappointment when you get inside. This hotel is in urgent need of a total renovation! Everything is old and dated. Rooms are dark with just some terrible old and dark brown furniture. Depressing! Save your money. There's nothing "grand" about this hotel!

The Civis Grand is, from the outside, indeed a grand hotel. With a big plaza-like space in front of it, it is also well situated. The main lobby and halls are very spacious and almost luxurious with high ceilings and columns everywhere. The breakfast buffet is rich and tasty, and staff are helpful and polite. Well, this is where the positives end! Our double room "Superior" was big indeed, with large full-length windows giving on the plaza, and quite clean, but everything else was old and in urgent need of restoration: the closets don't close/open easily; the beds look fragile; the toilet door doesn't lock; the electrical wall connections are dodgy; the bath tub doesn't have a shower curtain/glass; the toilet seat flushing system is questionable. So, outside and halls are imposing (Soviet-style-like), but rooms need "heavy" work. But if you're in Debrecen for a night or two and don't mind the "details" above, it's ok.

After reading all the reviews here I almost cancelled my booking in Aranybika but I am happy I didn't do it in the end. I really loved this hotel, our room was nice and clean, the bed was comfortable, the hall and the restaurant were beautiful and the staff was really helpful. The only thing that I would not call it a wellness hotel, the wellness part rather looks like a hospital, it doesn't provide a relaxing atmosphere. We spent the day in the Aquaticum, so we didn't need the local wellness services, anyway. But for a hotel, this place is perfect.

The room looked so terribly old ,maybe it was elegant in the beginning of the century but for today's standards and for the price they charged it was a very bad deal for me.The room smelled moldy, dust was everywhere, the carpets were stained, and allover ,it looked like this room has'nt been cleaned for a very long time .The channel selection on the tv was poor and the picture was rather fuzzy. The toilet seat was broken and the showerhead sprayed everywhere and made a total mess because the sower door did not close properly. The dinning room was dirty , the tablecloth stained, and the breakfast was of poor quality.Walls are paperthin,so you can hear the tv shouting and all other noises , even the intimate ones, from the room next to yours.Room service was bad , the server refused to charge the amount to my bill ,and insisted of paying him immediately .This hotel needs a thorough renovation and cleanup to meet some higher european standards. The hard beds and the stained linen and towels need to go!!!Allover this hotel was very disappointing.

  • Disliked — lack of privacy in the room ,and getting a poor deal for your money.
