“The best coffe and cakes”
Reviewed January 2, 2014

We were in the evening to drink a coffee and eat some cakes. The first impression is like entering in a cathedral with paintings on the wall. A piano player was playing all the time. The stuff is excellent, the service and the food. Little expensive but I would like to return there again!

“The building is impressive but not the menu!!!”
Reviewed January 2, 2014

We decided to go here for lunch having read so much about it...the interior was opulent and very grand...the architecture was stunning....unfortunately the menu we were given didn't live up to all the hype....perhaps things got lost in translation as on the website the food selections were far more extensive.....we are attending a wedding reception at the hotel tomorrow so perhaps we can evaluate the food again tomorrow......nevertheless it is worth a visit just to see the architecture....the cafe staff were attentive but didn't appeared worried when we walked out without ordering the menu appeared to have no options for vegetarians!!

“Great building, shame about the management”
Reviewed December 31, 2013

Having tried the newly renovated New York five years ago and been disappointed (see earlier review) we decided to give it another try. Sadly, no improvement.

On the plus side it is great that the cafe and the building have been restored to something like their original glory. The building had previously been a mess for decades and the cafe had been 'modernised' during the communist period with hideous overhead lights. Even a decade after the 1989 political changes in Hungary, the cafe's service and decoration retained a communist feel.

Our earlier assessment was that we might have forgiven the sky-high prices (HUF4,700 - US$23 - for two slices of cake, a double espresso and a pot of peppermint tea) and slow service if the place was run more in keeping with the traditions of the grand Central European cafe it once was. Rather than simply choosing our own table - as you would at any of the great surviving traditional Central European cafes - we had to wait to be shown to a table, as you would in a pretentious restaurant. And, disappointingly, the renovation of the cafe was completely let down by the ugly modern tables, which together with the chairs, were completely out of keeping with the age and style of the cafe. The management had also, eccentrically, decided to display modern abstract art around the cafe's rococo walls.

Moreover the former display cabinet of available cakes and pastries - a tradition in this style of cafe - had disappeared. And there didn't seem to be as many newspapers as you'd expect in such a once grand Austro-Hungarian cafe.

All the problems noted previously were still there. When we went to a table that seemed to be free we were barked at by bossy staff. For this and other reasons, the place doesn't remotely have the feel of a proper Central European cafe.

Sadly, none of these reservations seem to matter as the place is a thriving tourist trap.

But if you want something closer to the traditional Mitteleuropa cafe experience in Budapest, stick with the Central or Ruszwurm.

“nice interior but ...”
Reviewed December 30, 2013

Nice interiors, it is worth the visit. professional service. Nice/ok food but very high price for Budapest standards. More a turistic trap than a true city experience.
