Café Gerbeaud is located at Vorosmarty square in downtown Budapest and is one of the greatest (and probably oldest- over 150 years) and most traditional coffeehouses in Europe. The building is incredible with its stucco exterior finish while the interior includes grand chandeliers and exotic wood paneling. During the warm period, you must get a table outdoor on the terrace facing Vorosmarty square and Vaci utca. The coffee and large variety of cakes are exquisite (be sure to try the Esterhazy and Dobos cakes but the cream cakes are also wonderful as are the extravagant bakery goods. The only down side, is the staff. I’ve been there several times and it’s always the same—unfriendly and they almost seem irritated that you want decent service. Still, you have to go because of its history, charm and delicious delicacies.
