We had a lovely stay in Budapest. The hotel entrance is two large brown doors, don't be put off. Ring bell number 10 then 2nd floor. The hotel is very small but very clean,. All the staff were very helpful and pleasant. Rooms are very pleasant, clean, good shower and good air conditioning. Breakfast is served in your room, range of items on menu. Location is great. 1 minute to Metro and walking distance to the Danube and other sights. Food is varied but not many vegetables on menus. Salads vary greatly in size. DunaBella river cruise was great.

In a word: wow!

I stayed for three nights in room no. 1 at Budapest Museum Central with an inspiring view of the Hungarian National Museum just over the road. This quiet, clean, understatedly elegant, functional, very comfortable and safe hotel in a superb location offers great value for money for business travellers and tourists alike. Non-smoking throughout (though smokers can go outside to a small area by the lift to satisfy their craving). Not a place angling for noisy stag night punters.
The location: easy to reach by public transport from Budapest Ferihegy airport and Budapest Keleti pu. (the Eastern railway station connecting to Vienna) and just a 10 minute walk away from Vaci Utca, the main pedestrian street in the heart of the city. Costs HUF 560 = EUR 2 (from airport) or HUF 280 = EUR 1 (from Keleti railway station, prices valid on March 25, 2009)

(1) From the airport: Take the airport bus 200E to the final stop Kobanya-Kispest (about 20 minutes) then change to the M3 subway line at Kobanya-Kispest and travel 8 stops to Kalvin Ter (about 25 minutes). Budapest Museum Central is one minute’s walk away from the subway stop at Kalvin Ter. Walk up Muzeum Korut on the opposite side of the museum. Hotel entrance is at Muzeum Korut 39. You require two single tickets, one for the bus and one for the subway. Each single ticket costs HUF 280 (March 2009). Buy these from the RELAY newsagents / tobacconists on the right when you arrive in the arrivals hall at Budapest Airport Terminal 2. Exit the arrivals level and walk about 100 m to your left, past the taxis, to reach the 200E bus stop.

(2) From the railway station (Keleti pu.): take the M2 towards Deli pu. Only 2 stops (about 5 minutes). Get off at Astoria. Walk 4 minutes from the subway down to Muzeum Korut 39.

At Muzeum Korut 39 punch in the code “10” on the intercom (March 2009) at street level to announce your arrival and unlock the door. Walk into the courtyard and take the lift on your left to the second floor. You’ve arrived!

(3) To walk to the centre (Vaci Utca) go up Muzeum Korut street to the Astoria hotel / subway station. Take a left, heading towards the Danube. After about 5-6 minutes you’ll arrive at Vaci Utca.

The rooms:

Some face towards the National Museum (more light), the others towards the courtyard (less light). Room no. 1 next to the reception desk has an immaculate bathroom, is big and bright, has a high-ceiling, twin beds and a double door (soundproofing) as well as a double window (which cuts out street noise). Good desk and table for working. TV and free wireless Internet. All very clean. No minibar. No restaurant. Your choice of a basic complimentary breakfast served in your room. Tea, coffee and purified water always available in the reception area. Rooms cleaned at about 11 am every day.

Receptionists / service:

Very good. The knowledgeable, kind and very professional receptionists are very helpful and have a good command of English. The hotel has lots of tourist information material. Major credit cards accepted. Currency exchange available one minute away on the street.

Local amenities:

An extremely useful little 24-hour supermarket one minute’s walk away at Kalvin Ter. ATMs at Astoria. Currency exchange kiosks on the street (Muzeum Korut) offer far better rates than at the airport or railway station (March 2009). A gloriously anarchic and very funny, relatively large pub (the “Art Club”) just 3-4 minutes away on the last side street on the left as you walk up Muzeum Korut to Astoria: really worth checking out, great buzz and atmosphere, also nice and quiet in the afternoons. Lots of bookshops and antique shops on Muzeum korut. For a good choice of restaurants and cafes simply walk the 10 minutes it takes to get to the Vaci Utca and take your pick.

Safety / security:

This is not a run-down area. If you follow the usual precautions and use your common sense you shouldn’t have any problems.

Summary:

Everything worked! Budapest Museum Central is excellent at delivering the basic goods and does so with panache. A very good base for working in and/or touring the centre of Budapest. Extremely good value for money (about EUR 47 / night in March 2009). I shall definitely return.

This hotel was really lovely - the old building in which it resides gives a great atmosphere, particularly as it was snowing the night we arrived. The staff are friendly, the breakfast was nice and served on time, and the under-floor heating ensured the freezing air stayed right outside! The water was always hot and of course I was swayed by the complimentary bottle of wine that welcomed us!

I would definately recommend this for a romantic break, and surely for any other travellers too. The price was a bargain.

Good hotel - comfortable and clean. Very warm during the cold months there.

Unfortunately it isn't sign-posted so we spent ages walking aroung the vicinity looking for it.! After having asked businesses and other hotels where it was and having been pointed in the wrong direction a few times I was well annoyed upon entering the hotel! Once there, the receptionist took ages to check us in - she wasn't able to use the printer to print off an invoice! Thus, the first evening wasn't pleasant in the city!

However, it came up trumps with the great breakfasts, the warm, clean rooms and friendly staff! I'd stay there again if I went back to Budapest.

The location of the Hotel is wonderful. Right behind the National Museum. It is possible to explore the whole city by feet. The service was brilliant. The room was very nice, the cleanness was brilliant, too. A nice stay in a small but awesume hotel. The hotel is managed by a young team and you discover it. Internet possibilities, whirlpool in your suite and a young style.
