“Good atmosphere”
Reviewed April 19, 2013

A bit long walk to find this restaurant, it's not in tourist spot which is good, Lots of local people here. Staff are very kind, as well as the owner. Foods are very good, price is acceptable compare to quality and quantity of food.

“Truly divine!”
Reviewed April 17, 2013

When I was searching for this restaurant to write a review, I was expecting to see it at the top of the list, not where I found it??? This was without any doubt the best restaurant I was to while in Budapest (lovely city by the way). The food and the level of service just match each other, both with high quality and the warmth of really making you feel good. I would almost say that it transports you to Italy, if it wasnt for their wonderful selection of Hungarian red wines. Such a great looking place in such a great, safe neighborhood. No wonder the "famous" people that usually have dinner there!!

“Classic Italian food - excellent”
Reviewed April 16, 2013

So good we've been twice. Initially selected on basis of the good reviews by others on Tripadvisor.
The place consists of a formal restaurant (the Trattoria Pono d'Oro), the Gastronomia and an ice cream/cake shop.
Make sure you book a table a day in advance - they're popular.
On our first visit there we went to the Gastronomia, which is mainly an Italian delicatessen shop; my wife drooled while looking at what was on offer - she lived several years in Italy and experienced heavy feelings of deja vu. Upstairs they have a dining area with a few tables for informal dining. We were pleasantly surprised with an amuse-bouche, a filled and rolled up slice of ham, shared a very good roast beef salad, and then ordered pizza's (the pizza oven is shared between the Gastronomia and the Trattoria), which were excellent. Boy, did I like the prosciutto crudo on mine. Mainly Italian and Hungarian wines; wine prices are on par with other good restaurants in main European cities, so not so cheap. But the 2006 Barolo we had for € 40 was very nice. Very pleasant service by the waiters who took their time to explain and advise. Total bill € 83.

We ate at the main Trattoria restaurant on our last evening in Budapest. Nice atmosphere, lots of dark oak and brick, and an open kitchen so you can see the cooks at work (behind large glass windows).
Here again, very good service and advice without pressure by waiters who obviously enjoy working there. They do however add 10% service charge to the bill without asking. The vitello tonato was as it should be - tonato (tuna) mayo sauce completely hiding the slices of veal. Main courses were very good as well - saltimbocca alla romana done the right way, and breaded pork tenderloin pieces with a dark Barbera wine sauce and roasted chicory. A pasta al aioli side dish, grilled vegetables dish, bottle of Hungarian Pinot Noir and a bottle of mineral water complemented our meal. All in all, a nice evening, for a total bill of € 67 incl service charge.
Looking at the framed memorials, lots of celebrities have eaten here (Bruce Willis, Anthony Hopkins, Michael Schumacher to name a few).

In both places there are loads of Italians (several with their kids) who eat there - a good sign.
If you're looking for old-fashioned Italian quality food, you won't regret coming here.

“Good italian with nice atmosphere”
Reviewed April 10, 2013

Good italian food at a reasonable price. Best to book ahead as very popular. Interesting artefacts to look at in the restaurant. Easy to find in Pest - only about 10-15 mins walk from the Intercontinental hotel (near the river and chain bridge)
