All the info on travel forums on Gundel make it seem a place to opulent and out of reach. While it is an institution alright, the staff are very welcoming. The sunday brunch spread is excellent. It included a glass of bubbly and the tables are heaving with starters, mains, freshly grilled meats and lovely desserts. All this served in old world charm of silver and porcelain.

This is one of the most traditional and popular restaurants of Budapest. The location is very special, and the ambience very opulent.
The ever-popular "Foie-Gras" is excellent, but the smoked Salmon with Blini starter was covered in a very sweet sauce that made the dish quite unpleasant.
The main courses were equally inconsistent: Fish was good, but the duet of Beef and Veal was overcooked and disappointing. The accompanying vegetables were thankfully al-dente.
Please also be careful if you decide to purchase any of the Paté or Paprika on offer, we found out too late that they were only weeks away from the "sell-by" dates.

We were a family group of 8 people who had the 3 course set lunch outside in the 'garden'.
The food was wonderful, simple and to the point and the service was swift friendly and courteous.
The price was reasonable but not cheap.
We had a really great few hours here at this Budapest institution.
Highly recommended

Do you enjoy paying more for an average lunch that you would for a really good dinner? Do you get off on having all the silver domed plates at your table all lifted at the same time? Do you like being made to feel like you committed some kind of crime because you kept your coat with you (with your camera, phone, wallet, and other personal belongings in it) instead of checking it at the coat check room? If so, then Gundel is for you. Gundel is like SO many other places in SO many other cities -- the kind of place people tell you to go to not because it's so amazing, but because it probably once WAS amazing. But times change. This place is WAY too formal for my liking to be enjoyable. And too touristy. I don't think there was one Hungarian in the place with the exception of the staff. And in all honesty, the food isn't that great. Even the famous Gundel panckae isn't all it's cracked up to be. I had better namesake pancakes at other restaurants in Budapest. Still, I'm sure people will keep going here so they can say they went here. I'm sorry I did. When you're trying to see all a city has to offer, I wouldn't waste my time (and it does take a long time) eating here. Besides, you could have two better meals elsewhere for the price of one here.

What a classy place! The food is excellent, the variety is mind-boggling, and the desserts are to die for! I am not an all-you-can-eat person because I just don;t eat that much, but to see my favorite foods spread out like that in such quantity was amazing - from the szekeley goulash to the roast beef to the orange sponge and profiteroles I couldn't stop tasting. The china, the service, the music, all came together for me. But now I'm stuffed
