Hotel Central Basilica
Ranked #91 of 335 Hotels in Budapest
Reviewed June 7, 2013

We had planned to stay at the Hotel Central Basilica for a couple of days before going on a river cruise. Unfortunately, our cruise (and therefore trip) was cancelled due to the flooding. The Hotel Central Basilica staff (especially Anett) were so understanding and helpful regarding the situation. The other companies that we had to deal because of the cancelled plans should take lessons from the staff here, on how to treat customers.

When we plan a future trip to Budapest, we'll definitely be staying here.

If only the hotel could fix two issues it would be perfect.
Location great
Room size good
Room furnishings good for 3 star
Shutters on windows and double glazed so very quiet and dark room. = good nights sleep.

But:
WIFI not free, 7€ for 2 days per devise - the only rip off we encountered in Hungary. Join the 21st century and give it for free.
Checkout at 10:00 is ridiculous. Mind you we left at 11:30 and they were ok.
Oh and instal a hook for the shower head, the one at waist level is not ideal !!
Book for its location.

Travelling to Budapest you are spoiled for choice when it comes to hotels but it can be really difficult to find a good one. This hotel however ticks a fair few boxes. It is really well located right beside the Basilica and one of the best squares in the city for eating out and strolling at night. It is situated very near all the main metro lines and Vaci street shops are very close also. Staff are very friendly and helpful but since my accommodation was room only I cannot comment on the food.

Just returned from a 4 night stay in Budapest. The hotel is a short walk from 2 metro stops on the doorstep of St Stephens Basilica.
We checked in to find we had been given a free upgrade to a superior room. On entering the room we noticed the bed wasn't made but a quick call to reception had 2 maids in our room within minutes to rectify the oversight...
Breakfast was fair by continental standards except for the scrambled eggs, a disgusting texture, possibly made from egg powder? Choice of meats, cheeses, croissants, cereals and juices..
Coffee wasn't that great but with a Starbucks opposite and another chain 20 yards away we had a nice coffee fix when leaving to explore for the day..
A really good location to explore Budapest on foot from and would stay again without hesitation

I chose this hotel because of the location and it proved perfect, not just an easy spot to get around from, but a lovely area, particularly at night when the Basilica is floodlit. The streets around are mostly pedestrianised and there is a huge choice of restaurants, from cheap and cheerful to upmarket. We loved Misto Bistro in Sas Ut, the street behind the hotel. It is family-run and serves home-cooked food at very reasonable prices.

The hotel itself is well-run and comfortable. If you look on their own website, you can get an accurate impression of the accommodation. Our room was simply furnished, but quite spacious with a modern bathroom. My only complaint was that the mattress was a bit too hard. The breakfast was standard Continental fare, with a reasonable choice. To get such a fabulous location at these prices you really can't complain, but in fact, there was very little to complain about. If we go back to Budapest, we will definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: We are on the fourth floor facing the street. Our room was quiet, but it is a very busy street and I...

Spent four night short break in Budapest in May'13 using this hotel. The location next to the St Stephen Basilica is excellent for walking to many of the sites and the atmosphere at night in the square is very good with a choice of eating and drinking right on the doorstep.
The hotel was very good and clean with pleasant staff . Breakfast was the usual continental type with enough to satisfy and served from 0700-1000.
We had a small room but not cramped the air conditioning worked independently which
was good. I would recommend this hotel, only critic would be the lighting in the room was very dim maybe stronger bulbs would cure this.
Tip to Save: People over 65 can travel free on the public transport if they show identity but we never tried this as it is so busy we just paid to avoid the hassle.

The only good thing about this hotel is the location. Our room was not cleaned one day but the worst thing was the restaurant. On our first morning, all the tables were full of used crockery even though the restaurant was only half full, I asked politely if we could have a table cleaned but we eventually cleaned a table ourselves after waiting approximately 10 minutes. There was no toaster and no tea or coffee machine. The hot water, coffee and hot milk were all in flasks and were certainly only warm not hot.Throughout our 4 night stay there, the tables were still not cleared and they constantly ran out of cereal bowls and cups. One morning I asked for a cereal bowl and someone else asked for a cup, the waitress brought 4 cereal bowls and 2 cups.
Bearing in mind that this was not near the conclusion of the breakfast time, I think the service
was deplorable.I complained politely at reception but the receptionist made silly excuses and there was no apology which makes me think this is the norm.
