Owner description: The Hungarian State Folk Ensemble - regarded as one of the best in Hungary, was established in 1951.Its aims were to collect and play authentic folk music and to preserve the Hungarian folk dances and traditional costumes of Hungarian-inhabited areas by putting them on stage for the public.During the more than five decades of its existence, the Ensemble has achieved its aim by revitalizing the culture of the Hungarian people. Their rich and colourful repertoire entitled the Ensemble to be regarded as one of the top touring groups in the world. It has performed in 44 countries across four continents and won the admiration of an audience of more than seven and a half million people. In the last few years the Ensemble encountered special interest in the United States and Canada - which was illustrated by their fourth invitation to undertake a three-month coast to coast American tour in 1994. They have also toured the Far East and Western Europe. The Ensemble consists of 30 dancers, 14 members of the Gipsy Orchestra and 5 members of the Hungarian Folk Orchestra. The choreographies are all based on authentic dances, some of them were collected in isolated villages with dance elements dating back hundreds of years. The extraordinary folk music that inspired Liszt, Bartok and Kodaly is put on stage by both the Folk Orchestra and the world-famous Gipsy Orchestra. The 5 members of the Folk Orchestra play authentic, traditional instruments and perform Hungarian folk music at its highest artistic level. The famous Gipsy Orchestra plays both dance accompaniments and performs alone. Their rich repertoire includes folk music which inspired Hungarian and international classical composers such as Liszt, Brahms, Kodaly and Bartok. Aside from its performances around the country and abroad, the Ensemble gives approximately 90-100 annually performances in its Corvin square theatre, in the Budai Vigado.

“A small touch of old Hungary”
Reviewed June 4, 2013

This show is mainly for tourists, but nevertheless is enjoyable, and gives a taste of times-gone-by in Hungary. The musicians and the dancers are superb. The music includes gypsy music and the skills of the musicians are sometimes unbelievable; the dances are energetic and rivetting. The Duna Palota theatre evokes memories of the Hapsburg Empire and grandeur. Well worth the time and the ticket (I paid about 6000HUF or $28).

“Great dancing and ensemble”
Reviewed June 3, 2013 via mobile

I am enjoyed this performance in Duna Palota Budapest, the price 6200 Ft, 5400 Ft, and 3600 Ft. The performance start at 8 pm and the show is 90 minutes with 10 minutes break. I like their dance/folk very Hungarian's traditional. I can gain insight into the folk music, dance, and costume heritage of Hungary.

“Beautiful Theater”
Reviewed May 30, 2013 via mobile

We enjoyed this performance. It was definitely a tourist crowd but the musicians and dancers were all enthusiastic and energetic-unlike some shows of this type where I have felt like the performers would rather be anywhere else but on stage. I bought tickets before I left home and the transaction and pick-up were both easy. The seats are not reserved but I don't think any would be bad. I wouldn't call this a "don't miss" attraction but an enjoyable and entertaining evening.

“lovely evening, with lovely music and lovely dancing.”
Reviewed April 11, 2013

to get to theater is not easy... to make it easy, go to st stephan church, walk in the street in front of the main entrance of the church, 50 meters before the end of the street, you will find the theater,( to your left ), It does not look as a theater, it looks as an entrance of a small hotel !!!. You will spend about 2 hours with "energetic music and strong way of dancing". A night will always remind you of the charming Budapest.

“traditional hungarian folk dance”
Reviewed March 19, 2013

Want to see Hungarian folk dance? The real stuff? They are definitely the ones to see. Sometimes it's not them performing in their main venue, but whoever is there is worth seeing.
