Owner description: The Hungarian State Folk Ensemble - regarded as one of the best in Hungary, was established in 1951.Its aims were to collect and play authentic folk music and to preserve the Hungarian folk dances and traditional costumes of Hungarian-inhabited areas by putting them on stage for the public.During the more than five decades of its existence, the Ensemble has achieved its aim by revitalizing the culture of the Hungarian people. Their rich and colourful repertoire entitled the Ensemble to be regarded as one of the top touring groups in the world. It has performed in 44 countries across four continents and won the admiration of an audience of more than seven and a half million people. In the last few years the Ensemble encountered special interest in the United States and Canada - which was illustrated by their fourth invitation to undertake a three-month coast to coast American tour in 1994. They have also toured the Far East and Western Europe. The Ensemble consists of 30 dancers, 14 members of the Gipsy Orchestra and 5 members of the Hungarian Folk Orchestra. The choreographies are all based on authentic dances, some of them were collected in isolated villages with dance elements dating back hundreds of years. The extraordinary folk music that inspired Liszt, Bartok and Kodaly is put on stage by both the Folk Orchestra and the world-famous Gipsy Orchestra. The 5 members of the Folk Orchestra play authentic, traditional instruments and perform Hungarian folk music at its highest artistic level. The famous Gipsy Orchestra plays both dance accompaniments and performs alone. Their rich repertoire includes folk music which inspired Hungarian and international classical composers such as Liszt, Brahms, Kodaly and Bartok. Aside from its performances around the country and abroad, the Ensemble gives approximately 90-100 annually performances in its Corvin square theatre, in the Budai Vigado.

Want to see Hungarian folk dance? The real stuff? They are definitely the ones to see. Sometimes it's not them performing in their main venue, but whoever is there is worth seeing.

“The perfect way to begin our holiday in Budapest!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 1, 2013

During the time we visited Budapest, the full Folk Ensemble was not performing; however, the Szentendre Dance Ensemble and the Gödöllő Dance Ensemble appeared in a concert, and so we bought tickets for that. We were not disappointed in any way by their performance. The entire experience was absolutely delightful!

One of my favorite parts of the performance was a particular piece that the women sang. I love the nasal style which they use for singing folk songs!

As someone else mentioned, the hall is rather small, and any seat is a good one. I also got the impression that we were surrounded by locals. That also added to our enjoyment of the experience. This is not something that is not just created for tourists, but something that Hungarians appreciate as well.

“Sometimes they perform in Budai Vigado”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 6, 2013

if this is the venue...beware! The theater is fairly small so there is no need to buy expensive tickets...buy the cheapest you can...all seats are fairly equal. At our performance, a light catch on fire and the smell and smoke of burning plastic filled the stage and the audience seats. No one of authority stopped the show until several of us walked out to the hallway and convinced them. The staff was young and inexperienced. The musicians tried to play thru it. No oone communicated that they would air out the theater for a few minutes opening windows and resumme playing. We waited and were rewarded but many poeple left just not knowing. They are talented musicians and it is fun to see the costumes and the unique dancing.
