“Great place to cool off from the heat of the city”
Review of Palatinus Strand

We visited this pool twice during our five day stay in July 2012 as it was so hot and we wanted a place to cool off. Although there are clearly a mix of nationalities at the pool it feels more like a place for locals to visit rather than being too touristy. There are a couple of warm pools, the thermal one being nice and hot, together with a number of cooler pools. Both of our visits were in the afternoon and it was quite empty on both occasions. There are also a number of water slides and a wave pool which would be great for kids.

The changing rooms can be a bit confusing as there aren't any signs indicating which way to go. On our first visit it was women on the left, men on the right, but on our second visit both men and women were on the left. Apparently this is because they were busy the first time so opened the second block. However, the staff are helpful and were happy to point us to the right place. The locker system works well and you can pay for this when you pay to enter. On our visit it was 2400huf before 4pm, or I think 1700huf after, including locker. The locker rooms are staffed and they open and close your locker for you.

If it's hot I would recommend a visit here, especially as you can combine it with a wander around Margaret Island. We walked here from the entrance to the island and it was about a 20minute walk. Although it doesn't have the decor or buildings of the thermal spas in town it does have a real air of slightly faded eastern european glamour about it and is a fun outing.

What a place! We had so much fun and since the water isn't filled with chlorine you can easily stay a whole day in the water, but bring lots of waterproof sunscreen lotion. Don't get scared by worn down entrance and foodstands, the pools are nice and clean.

The previous couple of reviews are very good and give a good idea of what it's like. It helps that information is provided in English by the cash desk, but that's the last English you will find, and to be fair it's not a problem.

What the previous reviews did not say about the token for your locker is that for obvious reasons the token's number is not the number of the locker. You have to remember that or face the shame if you forget. (and the long wait until enough lockers get empty to find yours again). A lot of local people just take bags through and one of them will look after all the bags, or just leave them on the grass.

This place is where local people bring their kids, but it's not just kids as older people come to lie in the pool and sit in the shade. There's literally acres of space, and if you don't want to pay for a sun lounger, bring your beach towel and lie on the grass. Otherwise the sun loungers are 200 hufs (just take one off a pile and they will come round and charge you).

BTW just because it's not Sharm, don't forget the factor 50. It can get HOT (33 in early July) and I ended up looking like Hellboy!

We visited twice during our stay in Budapest in July 2012. It was a great way to cool down after sightseeing, the entry fee is cheaper after 4p.m. and it stays open until 7p.m. - 1,700 Florints per person.

After paying, you need to find the changing rooms - female on the left and Gents on the right as you face the pay desk. Go up the stairs unless you have paid extra to have a private cubicle. Change in one of the cubicles, then find an attendant who will show you a locker to use. They lock the locker and give you a token to keep. On your return show the attendant your locker and give them the token, and they will unlock the locker for you.

The complex is huge, as you come out of the changing rooms, the slides are the furthest on the left, then the wave pool, a couple of other pools, then the 8 lane 25 metre pool, then the spa pool - ( go round all the little walls and try out the various jets of water, or go around the central river. the jets work to a timed programme, so change) then a play pool, shallow and warm, then the thermal pool. I found the pools clean.

We did not try the food as we were eating later.

Easiest way to get there is the 26 bus, we bought a day ticket for the buses/trams etc. The place is near the end of the island, and it is obvious when you get there. We got off a stop too early one day and had a longish walk in the heat. There is also a tourist land train that appears to be free and goes from next to Magrit Bridge to the Strand.

This massive pool complex on Margaret island was a delight for our family of four with two 7 year olds. We enjoyed paddling in the wave pool, then visited the slides. Without so much fear of liability, we parents were able to slide with our kids until they were comfortable sliding down the massive 36 foot high winding slide on their own. Then, hubby and I braved the kamikaze--a straight 40 foot drop that is a true adrenaline rush! Next we made our way across the acre of pools to the thermal pool and basked in the warm water. We finished with a visit to the endearingly cute children's pool, where boy language was able to transcend national language boundaries while pirates with water cannons played. Afterward we enjoyed a hot dog before heading home. No cars are allowed on the island so we took a cab to the hotel and then hoofed it to the Strand. Next time I would get a bus ticket and take the 26 Bus which drops right outside. Please note that the entire area has the slightly delapidated aura of a former Warsaw pact country fallen on hard times. But if you are a family out looking for fun in Budapest, Palatinus Strand cannot be beat!
