Owner description: The Hungarian Jewish Museum is located in the heart of Budapest, in the Historical Jewish quarter, within the building complex of the Dohany Street Synagogue that was built in 1859. The idea of an independent Jewish Museum arose in 1909, when our Museum was founded. The first home of the collection made up of approximately 1,500 artefacts was an apartment downtown Budapest. The Jewish Museum found its final home in 1932 at the building designed by Laszlo Vago and Ferenc Farago, which was constructed next to the Dohany street synagogue in a matching architectural style. In 1942 two employees of the Hungarian National Museum hid the valuable artefacts of the Jewish Museum in the cellar. Thanks to their bravery the entire rich collection exists today. The permanent exhibition was rearranged in 2017, displaying the Jewish festivals and lifecycle. Our Milev-App The Milev-app can be downloaded from Google Play and the App Store.

I expected the museum to be a bit bigger and to have better exponates. The interactive board is the only thing I liked in the museum.

The museum contains a very nice display of Judaica artifacts from Hungary and its surroundings.
An important show is the room dedicated to the major events of the Holocaust in Budapest.
I would recommend this attraction only if combined with a guided tour in the Synagogue.
In any case, I think both places are a must for Jews and Israelis and for people which are concerned about racism and global violence.

We bought our tickets at 3 o clock and the synagoge and museum closed at 4 o clock , they didnt say anything to us. SO dont BUY a ticket in the afternoon but in the morning because you can see everything then . We didnt have enough time..
Its not a big museum but when you want to read or see the things properly you need time .

We took the extended tour which included the synagogue, memorial garden and the museum. Enjoyed the synagogue but the tour seemed a bit rushed. Beautiful architecture though. Then decided to browse through the museum but were stopped by an elderly gentleman who wanted to give us the tour. He explained each dislay in as much detail as we liked and we learned a lot about the jewish culture, holidays and tradition. The tour concluded with graffic images of the holocaust and given that our guide is a survivor himself, we really appreciated him taking his time and sharing part of his life. So this really was more than the ordinary museum tour. Thank you.

Too expensive. Prices of all jewish museums in Poland, added together, will not create price of ticket for this one. Cracow, Warsaw, Łódź, u will see much more for no money.
