“Very friendly staff,good Hotel”
Reviewed July 26, 2009

We found the staff very friendly and helpful. Special thanks to Agnes behind the bar, she went out of her way top make us feel very welcome, even going as far as assisting us to buy our travel tickets from the local shop to get into town. It is appreciated and pays to try and speak the lingo so buy /take a phrase book. Room was clean with fresh towels provided and beds made daily. Hotel situated out of town at the end of the 173 bus route, about a 20minute ride to Ferenciek Tere. We went bed and breakfast to give us the freedom to choose our dining venues. A variety of breakfast options are provided, but don't expect exactly what you get at home, you are in a foriegn country after all. A buffet lunch is available from 12 to about 5pm and a dinner menu is available for the evening if you want to just stay in the hotel and relax. They have a good sized, if a little narrow swimming pool, and on the top floor there is a ten pin bowling room. Behind the hotel you will find the Polus Shopping Centre with a variety of retail shops including Tesco and a pharmacy. Further into the shopping centre there is McD's, Pizza Hut, KFC, as well as a variety of other food options. If you want to buy water Visegradi and NaturAqua are closest to the type you can buy in the UK. Still varieties have pink lids while Carbonated have blue.

My husband and I stayed here to celebrate our birthdays. After looking at previous reviews we decided to give the hotel the benefit of the doubt and try it thinking the reviews may have been overexaggerated - they were not! This hotel is situated 40 minutes by public bus (173) away from the city centre, off a main road, behind a petrol station, next to a McDonalds and in front of the Polus Shopping Centre. There are no facilities around this hotel such as restaurants or pubs for a drink - unless you like fast food! The bus service terminates at 11:00pm so the last bus back to the hotel area is at 10:30pm from the Astoria stop. Our hotel room was tiny, smelled of tabacco and really dirty - there were dust over all the furniture, all sorts on the floor - including someone's pubic hair! - the bathroom had white scum around the bathtub, remnants of excrement in the toilet, no shower curtain, no bath mats for the floor, the air conditioning did not work, the tv had such a bad reception is was neither use nor ornament, the linen had small orange stains on them. The reception staff treated you with an air of indifference and were more interested in watching the TV that was constantly on in reception. The breakfast was a no go area! Advertised as between 7-10am, we arrived at 8:45am the first morning to find all the lights were off and the tables had been set for lunch - not a member of staff in sight. When we arrived earlier the next morning, we were greeted to dirty tablecloths, dirty cultery, cups, unlabelled food which was uninspiring - no selection, it wasn't refilled, stale bread, flies everywhere and what looked like the remains of the previous nights meal ! They didn't even have a toaster! The bar was filthy, as was the swimming pool (the only facilitiy that was free). The staff were incapable of keeping any order as 4 out of the 5 nights we stayed numerous busses full of German and Slovakian youths arrived and kept the whole hotel up by drinking, yelling and carrying on - nothing was done about this by the staff! Basic we expected - dirty, noisy and unhelpful we didn't! I urge anyone with sense not to stay here - for what we paid we could have done better. This is at best a 1 star hotel - certainly not a 3. It totally ruined our stay in Budapest through no sleep, no food and having to travel every day to get to the centre.

The benefit is that the hotel is situated near The Polus Center that works 24 hours a day.
In front of the hotel is situated McDonalds. Who likes it will be glad:)
Inside the hotel you can find bowling, pool and restaurant. If you need to reach center of Budapest take bus 173.
In general the hotel is NORMAL, if you are not planning to spend your vacation inside it all the time insted of discovering beautiful Budapest.

positive: good position near the bus station, economic hotel, there is a bowling and swimming pool, near a big shopping center.

negative: breakfast is not good because there are not brioches, chocolate or cake but only meat and gulasch. small rooms.

as you drive into the car park the awful sight hits you.... teh tenement blocks surrounding thsis distastorous place. Then you walk up the steps in the hotel and you are greeted by the most obnoxious staff you can find.....not only do they not like speaking to english people they also make it there mission to laugh at you at every oportunity.

Breakfast - if you like ratatouille and deep fried egg you are in luck but if you like simple clean food this is not ur place....

Restaurant - awful food never busy.... service slow with two people in there

Rooms air cionditioning like to burn your face off with heat and the bathroom has no ventilation so your room will smell.......

Positive points - tesco is round the corner, taxi service from hotel is cheapest in Budapest

For me the experience was not so good as other are saying...
Reception guys were very bored when i get there, room was not clean(2 bugs were running around my things on the floor) the bathroom was dirty and the cherry on top: the windows where located face to McDonalds(drive-in...:((.....) so all night i smelled the cooked oil and heard all the motos and cars stopped to get some burgers....some location...
My opinion: i will never return to that hotel again...

Imagine a combination of 'Fawlty Towers' and the guest house in Del boy's 'Jolly Boys Outing' but without the humour, and you'll get somewhere near our first impressions of the Polus. It turned out to be a little harsh.
You get what you pay for. My two sons and I were there for the Sziget festival and only used the hotel for sleeping. The beds were comfortable. Shower was good, plenty of hot water. Room service every day. The pool looked OK although we didn't use it.
It's close to bus routes ( 73,173 will take you down town and links to trams and metro, 30 minutes) and the Mall next door is excellent. Staff at reception appeared a bit dour but were helpful when needed. English was understood.
Bad points?
Breakfast rather limited in choice and quality. TV didn't work but not really a problem because we were hardly there to need it. Air conditioning worked but a bit feeble and it is essential in the heat in August in Budapest. No shower curtain but not really a problem.
On a general note. We bought a weekly transport pass for about £12 each for unlimited travel on buses trams and the metro in Budapest, great value if you're travelling around the city. Only use the main taxi companies such as 666-666, City taxi or Buda taxi and avoid the more expensive unofficial mini cabs.
If all you want is a base to explore the sights then the Polus is OK but in truth if this is typical of a three star in Hungary then I would go for a higher star rating if possible, I won't be going back.
