“A great deal!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 22, 2006

I spent 4 nights at this hotel in Budapest during my Easter holidays. I think you cannot find a better service for what you spend here (i paid 14 euros per person per night with breakfast included!). Yes, the hotel is quite outside the city centre (15 - 20 minutes by bus - note on the other side of the city from the airport!) but a good bus service guarantees an excellent service till 11.30 pm! Rooms and bathrooms are quite old but they have eveything you need for a great city break in this beautiful capital!

Hotel in need of refurbishment. Staff ok except for surly female receptionist who couldn,t be bothered to let us know taxi company had rung to say they would be late to pick us to take us back to airport for return flight. We were left anxious when it did not arrive, and only found out when we asked receptionist
to ring them. Hotel insist you wear swimming caps in pool which you pay 200ft to hire. Also no changing room so have to walk back to room through hotel wet.
Ten pin bowling out of order. Great views from hotel.
Evening meal in hotel good value. Tried out Normafa grill as recommended by others, very disappointing, expensive and poor quality. Food generally in Budapest not brilliant. I have never seen so much graffiti in the streets of Budapest. Gellart thermal baths expensive 25ooft. Flea market not worth visiting (like car boot sale). Overall first visit to eastern block country, in no great hurry to return.

I stayed at the Hotel Agro in March 2005, I had decided upon it because of last minute offer advertising very cheap rooms. I was travelling with a female friend and we booked a double room through a well-known travel website. I had forgotten the room voucher but did manage to persuade the lady on the desk that we were meant to be there, even though she was sceptical about the style of the voucher we had printed off a second time.
The room was mostly brown, not recently decorated. We had a balcony, a good sized (not too compact) en suite bathroom, a TV with some international channels and a minibar, useful for keeping fruit cold. The double bed was huge, two ample sized single beds, each with its own duvet. The balcony overlooked the city and the surrounding hills, you could make out the Danube quite clearly. The room was warm and never uncomfortable.
The in-house restaurant wasn't very nice and too expensive for the quality of the food, it was mostly used by the school parties that frequented hotel. The breakfast was typically continental, bread and cold meat/cheese with some cereal. For a better meal we went across the road to the adjacent hotel, it served a range of dishes from a mix of cultures, nicely priced and delicious.
The other facilities in the hotel were dated, we didn't use the pool, spa, hairdressers, bar or bowling alley, all of which had a decidedly seedy over tone.
The location... the Hotel Agro Panorama sits on the top of a large steep hill. You are *half an hour* away from the city by bus. This will only take you to Moscow Square (not a central locatioin) where you will need to transfer to other forms of transport. There are two buses that will take you to the hotel, both of which run fairly regularly. This distance from the centre was the single most disappointing factor about the hotel, it is virtually impossible to fully appreciate the night life of the city because your room is so far away. We did not try out any of the taxi forms because we wanted to make sure we were back in good time.
For budget travellers though, this is a great hotel option, the hotel has a swimming pool, two bars, internet access, a hairdressers and beauty salon and a bowling alley. However, they're all very dated (brown and dark).
The beautiful views and clear air at night make up for a lot of that though.

Just arrived back from another trip to Budapest, I stayed at the agro for the first time and although the journey by airport minibus (2700 forints return)seemed to take an age the views over Budapest are worth it.Iwas met by a cheery receptionist who welcomed me and told me my room number, A large room with fridge t.v. and on suite The shower attachment from the sink over the bath is adequate but a person with only one hand would find it very difficult to hold. The restaraunt on the fifth floor is very good and not too expensive and the buffet breakfast very good (eat as much as you like) The bar on the second floor is good a pool table, tennis table and ten pin bowling are available at a small charge.Free Internet. The sauna, massage solarium and swimming pool are available but beware my friends little boy was refused entry to the pool with his parents as he was under four.
Buy a single ticket from reception for the 21 or 90 bus to Moskva ter (Moskow square) then purchase a 1,3or 5 day tourist pass for the transport from the kiosk this is the cheapest way.
The only gripe I had was the male receptionists refusal to book the return airport minibus for me he just pointed to the public phone saying Its not my service. The other hotels I have stayed in have done this for me.
I will be staying at the Agro again in November.

Just back from Budapest, decided to give my view on our Hotel,Agro.
Although it is quite far from the city centre,it has great views of the city and surrounding hillside. The buses,21&90,are a 100mt walk from the hotel,(every 5-10mins)this takes you into moscow square, where you catch the metro. Its then a further 3-4 stops to the hub of the city.Journey takes around 20 minutes, depending on traffic, time of day etc.Taxi's cost between 4000 and 6000 depending on where and what time you catch them,it also pays to haggle !
The hotel itself was very clean and although it is dated it has all the amenities on hand, heated pool, sauna, massage, gym, etc.
The staff were great, really helpful, explained everything clearly, even drew maps or marked on maps where to go,numbers and names of buses, trains etc.
There is a really nice restaurant just up the road from the hotel, about 300mts,Normafa Grill.Excellent food and lots of choice,we went there for lunch and evening meals,no complaints at all,and very reasonably priced.
Fillet Steak round 2400 Forints(£7).
A very cheap stay, but a if you don't like to spend time on the transport, probably why it is cheap, then don't stay here.
All in all its worth the price we paid and have no regrets.

I have been visiting Budapest for the last 25 years, and recently only stayed in 5 star downtown hotels, but we thought we would have a total change and go for the budget end of the market. We were pleasantly surprised and would recommend this hotel for a cheap stay.Stayed for 3 nights, the standard was better than expected given that we paid 28 British Pounds per night for a double room with breakfast. On the plus side, fantastic views, the best in Budapest, the place was clean, albeit typical 1970's style and the ''all you can eat'' buffet style breakfast is more than adequate. The staff were generally pleasant and helpful. The location is in a very peaceful spot, the air is fresh and clean and significantly cooler than downtown, which is a great advantage in the heat of summer. The public transport link to the city is excellent, a bus leaves every 8 minutes, just a short walk from the hotel.
The only major problem we encountered was on our last night when a wedding had been booked. They used the rooftop terraces and restaurant area(located on the 5th floor) for the reception which included a live band. The noise permeated every room of the hotel. At 1am we requested to be moved hoping a lower floor would be quieter(we were on the 4th), they moved us to the second floor but this was just as noisy and our complaints were met with shoulder shrugging indifference, the night manager said there was nothing he could do as the wedding party had paid to use the facilities all night, our argument that we had paid to sleep there fell on deaf ears. A very pleasant stay spoiled by a very noisy wedding. If I booked in there again I would make sure they did'nt have any prebooked functions for the duration of my stay. If we had'nt encountered the noisy wedding problems we would have rated this hotel in the above average category. Despite our last night problems I would still consider staying there again as the location and views suited our requirements.

This is a real 70s hotel with brown and orange interieur, it is rated 3*, but is more lika a 2+. The rooms are big enough and have balconys, but have wall to wall carpet, and cheap bathroom with a short showerhose connected to the sink that makes it a little uncomfertable. The hotel has a realy great view so make sure you get a room at the front. The staff was ok. The hotel is in a quiet area on top of the Buda side, some 25 min from the center with bus. Paid around 50$ fore a double in Jun 05.
