Zangio is a small chocolatierie at the up-and-coming old Jewish quarter of Budapest. The area, part of which was once a ghetto, is now bustling with restraurants, some of them (but not this one, but we did eat "Jewish Chocolate" made to resembel a cake popular with Hungarian Jews) Kosher, and it seems each has its' own tale to tell. We met the owner of Zangio after a walk down the streets, some of which are paved with memorial stones for those who died here. A chocolate came as an acceptable way to bridge the gap between then and now. The chocolates are beautiful to look at, and some tell the story of the area in which they are made. The owner was happy to recommend other places to visit, and told us the story of his little business, the name of which is a combinatin of the owners name, and the names of his wife and his daughter. And hey, the chocolates were lovely...

Just behind the great synagogue there is a tiny lovely shop with great professional pralines that are hand-made. There are special flavors like onion or chili, I've especially loved the "Flodni" praline and the "friend of wines" one but all the other flavors were really good too (including more "traditional" flavors like passion fruit, hazelnut etc. - for those of you who were frightened to read about the onion praline ;-)

This little chocolate shop in the Jewish Ghetto, was just a wonderful find! The owner gave us tastes of some of his interesting flavors...He cares about quality ingredients and things being fresh and in season. The raspberry is really good! However, he has many unique and interesting flavors! They are willing to mix interesting flavor combinations... and have some basic standbys. The pieces are attractive and you know that you have stumbled upon a small artisan chocolate shop. They don't ship to the US.
The only thing I didn't like was I could not take it all home! (My daughter ate most of what we purchased to share).

This is a place to buy pralines in Budapest. No, this is THE place to buy pralines in Budapest. In fact. when you have tasted theirs, it could happen that you stop buying pralines in most other places of the world!

The family owners love what they do, and it shows. They have standards like mocha and exotics like sorrel. And they develop new varieties all the time, one better than the other.

You can also arrange to visit their workshop in the basement of their home in the outskirts of Budapest. A sweet delight ...
