My husband and I visited this museum whilst visiting Budapest.
It is a great insight into the struggles of Hungary and Budapest under communism.
We included the audio guide in the admission which I would recommend to do particularly for English speaking visitors.

This is a very chilling but informative experience. You can easily spend a couple of hours in here. Going down in the lift was not great, it was quite busy and it can get claustrophobic. Once in the basement you can view and spend some time in the cells. It is a very moving place and I highly recommend it.

This is a museum everyone should visit to remember how regime systems made people suffer. You shoud use an audio equipment, or you can book a guide two weeks before the visit!
Shocking place. That was my third visit there.

I would certainly recommend visiting this museum, but given the subject matter it is rather disturbing and you do need to allow some time to take in what took place there. I thought the displays were done in a thoughtful way, without sensationalising what went on. However, the displays could do with a better explantation. My son got more out of it as he has studied this period of history, but having to read the explanation sheets was distracting-they were long and very detailed. However, if you are looking to understand what happened in recent history in Hungary then visit this museum.

Good insight to hungarian history during war and after. Lots of reading, printed leaflets for reading as you walk around. Can be busy so best to go first thing in the morning or queueing outside.
