“Fantastic but ask for an English audio guide”
Reviewed September 9, 2013

60 Andrassy Ave, for some reason its not listed in all the guides but I urge anyone with the time to take a visit to House of Terror, its an easy walk from the city centre.

It narrates the history of Hungary with obviously special attention to the dark Russian and Nazi periods.

A very engaging museum with fantastic use of music and visuals, I didnt realise until the end there is an audio guide (available in English and German) I would highly recommend this as I felt I missed a lot of context as not all the exhibits are in English.

a powerful and disturbing way to spend an afternoon

“Worthwhile but depressing”
Reviewed September 6, 2013 via mobile

This museum records the history and experience of the country under the Nazi and Soviet reign of terror. From the techniques used to gain control, to the facilities in the basement where people were tortured and hung, it provides a lesson on what can happen when a small group of psychopaths take control of a country. The displays were tastefully presented and there were English language notes pages in most rooms so the story is clear. I feel that I missed some of the impact of the story, though, because I could ot understand some of the presentations eg interviews and films. Good lessons and worth a visit of an hour or an hour and a half.

“Unbelievably moving.”

A beautiful informative tribute to the lives lost. Would help if the eras were clearly separated in each room.

Good for teens and above, especially for those of us from countries that take our freedom for granted. Well laid out, lots of video clips that make the events come alive. Too scary for little ones.

This museum is a bit heavy, but it's worth the shock. While the content itself is not too significant, the arrangement, display and course of visit is impressive. If you are patient you can really capture the details of both histories (Nazi and Soviets). Most of the content is already in English, though some tags are still yet to be translated. The visit is over 3 hours reading almost everything. This was a highlight in our trip to Budapest.
