“Serious, somber side to Budapest, highly recommended”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 17, 2013

An essential visit for anyone who wants to learn about the horrific modern history of Hungary. All to often we visit places without really knowing what has happened in the past to shape a country's culture.
Nothing is commercialized or glamorized, just hard cold facts laid out in the impressive labyrinth of the old Nazi and Communist HQ where murder was part of daily life. There's not enough recognition in other countries of their evil past so full marks to the Hungarians for facing up to the sins of their previous rulers (I live in Spain where talking about Franco still seems almost taboo).
Highly recommended - not exactly pleasant (especially the basement) but for those of you who like history, essential. You need at least 2 hours to do it justice.

“very serious and key to understanding the Hungarian people”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 16, 2013

all of our Hungarian hosts insisted we go here and then one took us. We wore headsets which described the rooms and exhibits in english. probably more information then a normal person would want but ahistory buff like me and i am off to the races.

coat check and nice tiny cafe.

this is recent history for the hungarian people and they all have either suffered personnally, had family members or relatives that were injured from this period of time.

it really put the post war period in perspective for an American. gives you a better understanding of what happened and why.

people relocated so politicians and their friends could seize their property / houses apartments

what happens when elections do not represent the will of the people. almost humorous to learn the efforts that the communists went through to try and show to the world that they were the legitimately elected party of Hungary.

Clearly shows what happens when we win the war and lose the peace.

For a country that has suffered so much the Hungarians are an extremely friendly group of people.

the museum is easy to find and very near the old metro route like at the front door.

might be a bit too dark for small children and too serious for those who just want a visually happy experience in Budapest.

i think they do not permit photos inside.

price is 2000 HUF with reduced rated for EU citizens 6-26 & 62-72

audio guide 1500 HUF

“Very interesting”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 13, 2013 via mobile

The house of terror gave a really good insight to all that Budapest has been through. There are sheets of paper explaining each area as you walk through in all languages so make sure you collect them to get the full info. The entrance fee was cheap for the amount of info you take in. Highly recommend a visit to get a good insight to Budapest's history!
