As an eternally lazy tourist who never even made it to Buda until my third trip to the city (on the a bus tour, not entirely sure that counts) I thought it was time to get to know the place a little better. Alternative Budapest is perfect for those, who, like me, would rather see the cool hangouts of the people that actually live in the city rather than the churches, cathedrals and museums. The tour guide, Lauren, has a hugely vast knowledge of the street art, bars, shops and buildings that she displays throughout the tour and even carries a file of further works by the artists throughout the world. Despite having stayed round the corner from three points of the tour before I had never noticed one of them. Lauren gives you the ability to look around the city with a slightly smug look on your face feeling like you've been let in on some of the city's secrets and knowing that you are seeing some of the things that people never even notice as they walk by. The final stop of the tour is Szimpla, voted one of the best bars in the world but Lauren takes you there at the perfect time in the early evening when none of the tourists have arrived yet and you can have a good explore of this huge bar to yourself. Lauren is a truly interesting and welcoming tour guide who is always keen to answer questions on anything about your trip in Budapest whether or not it be involved in her tour. One thing I would point out is make sure you don't leave the tour to the end of your trip because you will regret it! I would challenge anyone to take Lauren's tour and not want to go back to all the stops to see what more they have to offer!

So in the interest of full disclosure, I should mention that I live in Budapest. And that the tour was never more than a 10 minute walk from my apartment. And that that I have friends who've advocated for the summary execution of any self-proclaimed 'street artist'. And that I've never spraypainted anything besides an old refrigerator in my life. But all that said, I'm amazed at all the awesome little stories and hidden gems Lauren's dug out of my backyard that I'd never heard of or just never noticed. From French sheep to local artists to the crumbling synagogue across from my favorite coffee shop in the city, the tour was amazingly informative and engaging. I'd never realized what stories there were behind the little animals and portraits sprayed around my and other cities and what depth there was to the subculture here and abroad. Lauren was spectacular and engaging-amazingly knowledgeable about everything you see along the way and has obviously interacted extensively with the people and places she's showing you. It definitely earns its 'alternative' title, if for no other reason than it's nearly all places and things you would literally walk by without giving a second thought-you really learn to appreciate the other side of Budapest. Definitely worth checking out-I'll never look at random meerkats or space invaders quite the same way!

Alternative Budapest shows you why Budapest is cool. In addition to beautiful buildings and a tumultous history, there's also a vibrant, awesome underground culture that tourists don't often get to see - unless they go on this tour.

Our guide gave us amusing anecdotes, took us to cool shops and cafés and opened our eyes to some of the brave and brilliant street art in Budapest. Tour guide Lauren makes you feel like you know Budapest like an insider would, instead of being just another tourist.

In addition to being an awesome tour guide, Lauren is also an awesome source of information about what to see, where to eat and what to do in Budapest - better than any tourist information centre I've ever been to!

This special walking tour was quite amazing! Guide Lauren was passionate about her adopted city and full of quite special information, anecdotes and insight. Her knowledge of street art and alternative Budapest life was extensive and she imparted that knowledge in a friendly, fun way. We didn't expect to learn about dead drops, yarn bombing and "The Sheepster", as well as other famous street artists, but it was all quite fascinating. Visiting the number three and number one bars in the world just topped off a great tour, while stories of physical transformations from decibel overload on the A38 were just surreal! We really feel part of the city now....bravo Lauren!

The Budapest Alternative Walking Tour was fantastic! It was so nice to get off the beaten tourist path and explore neighbourhoods where there are funky bars tucked away, street art, design shops, good coffee places and shopping! You would never find these places on your own so to be shown around on this well researched area of Budapest is amazing! It's also good to hear the story behind everything and Lauren makes the whole experience very enjoyable. She is a great guide and has gone to a lot of effort to show you her favourite places in Budapest. She is also happy to assist you with finding other places to visit once the tour is over so you don't fall for the glitzy, over priced tourist hot spots. This tour is well worth doing next time you're in Budapest!
