As an eternally lazy tourist who never even made it to Buda until my third trip to the city (on the a bus tour, not entirely sure that counts) I thought it was time to get to know the place a little better. Alternative Budapest is perfect for those, who, like me, would rather see the cool hangouts of the people that actually live in the city rather than the churches, cathedrals and museums. The tour guide, Lauren, has a hugely vast knowledge of the street art, bars, shops and buildings that she displays throughout the tour and even carries a file of further works by the artists throughout the world. Despite having stayed round the corner from three points of the tour before I had never noticed one of them. Lauren gives you the ability to look around the city with a slightly smug look on your face feeling like you've been let in on some of the city's secrets and knowing that you are seeing some of the things that people never even notice as they walk by. The final stop of the tour is Szimpla, voted one of the best bars in the world but Lauren takes you there at the perfect time in the early evening when none of the tourists have arrived yet and you can have a good explore of this huge bar to yourself. Lauren is a truly interesting and welcoming tour guide who is always keen to answer questions on anything about your trip in Budapest whether or not it be involved in her tour. One thing I would point out is make sure you don't leave the tour to the end of your trip because you will regret it! I would challenge anyone to take Lauren's tour and not want to go back to all the stops to see what more they have to offer!
