“Old world charm”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 5, 2014 via mobile

Enjoyed our stay here. Big rooms. Automatic shades for windows. Lovely small balcony. Remodeled bathrooms with hair dryer, make-up mirror (wish all hotels had these), no wash cloths, bath wash also served as shampoo. Wifi in lobby. In-room safe. Great breakfasts with plenty of choices. TV has few English speaking channels. Enjoyed the music channel the most. Hotel in the center of everything. Metro right outside the door. Easy to walk to Spa, Jewish Quarter, good restaurants and shopping. Really enjoyed the night dinner boat cruise. The city at night is amazing with so many lovely buildings lite up. Enjoyed our stay...the hotel has a very interesting past as does the McDonalds next door.

Through extensive business travel we have been fortunate to stay in some wonderful hotels around the world, but one comes down to earth in retirement when travel is self funded and not on company expenses.

What a delight to find a charming hotel from the elegant age of travel (built 1814-ish) that didn't break the bank. The Danubius Astoria is just that and the staff really come from the old school - before the term "customer service" was coined. They treated us as welcome guests in their lovely home, rather than another pair of fee-paying feet through their front door.

We were comfortable and every question or need fulfilled. No this is not a major international chain which claims to be a six star hotel - and actually that is rather nice after years of impersonal business travel.

For those who found locals sullen, perhaps a little reflection on their history might explain. I defy many to smile from ear to ear after decades of oppressive and brutal regimes. It may take a generation to forget, or exposure to more international visitors to help Hungarians to be more expansive and expressive in their welcome.

I would happily stay at this hotel again!

This hotel was a great find , it is centrally located to a lot of sites on Pest Side and the hop on /hop off Bus had a stop right opposite. The decor of the hotel is great, the room was spacious with a good sized bathroom and shower which i like. The staff were friendly , and rooms cleaned every day to a high standard. The restuarant was good although a limited Menu (but good food) and staff excellent, plenty to choose at breakfast and weel worth the money we paid , with both continental and near english breakfast, rooms were warm , but for me that was fine and a good stocked mini bar and a safe in the room which worked by swiping one of your credit/debit card to open and shut , never come across this before but thought it was a good way to do it. If i had to fault the hotel for anything it would be that there was no tea/coffee making facilities in the room , but that will not stop me recommending this as a great hotel

A group of 50 of us has just spent 4 days in the is hotel - the staff, the building and serivce were incredible. Only one snag if you are in a room at front of hotel - its noisy from the trams and traffic. Ask to be moved - they will accomodate if can.

Room Tip: Rooms at front of hotel noisy from traffic.

Stayed here for four nights in early March First impressions were very good, and we were welcomed by very friendly staff. Our room on a high floor (which we had previously requested) was of a very high standard and the maid service was excellent. One concern we had was the menu in the restaurant was rather limited, it was ok for us, but if we had stayed longer it would have become a bit repetitive. In saying that I do recommend the Hungarian Goulash soup.
We would return to this hotel.

Room Tip: Go for a high floor to lessen the traffic noise.

Just returned from a three night stay at the Astoria, fantastic greeting and service for the duration of our stay,.beautiful lobby and restaurant area gives a fantastic first impression,.the location is also great with a ten minute walk to the river and nearly everywhere is accessible by foot or from the tram stop outside,.i can't wait to return and certainly will,.if I have a slight gripe I'd like free wi fi in the rooms rather than just the lobby

We were made to feel welcome as soon as we arrived. All staff were friendly and polite and made our stay all the more enjoyable at this traditional hotel. The room was immaculately clean although a bit noisy due to traffic nearby. I'm sure if we had asked they would have moved us.
The service in the bar and breakfast restaurant was excellent with sufficient choice.
The hotel is situated close to many of the must see attractions including the Danube and the hop on hop off bus stop is just over the road. If you are expecting modern, fashionable and minimalistic decor don't go to this hotel. If you want to step back in time to a welcoming, traditional, clean and beautifully preserved hotel then this comes highly recommended. Excellent value for money and will definitely return for more 5* treatment. Thank you Astoria
