“Take the nearly free ferry”
Reviewed July 21, 2013

My highlight of Budapest was the nearly free ferry ride on the Danube. Simply buy a day-pass from any subway station, and it includes unlimited rides on the ferry.

While not first-class service, the upper deck is shaded, and with the right weather, it was simply great to zig-zag between Buda side and Pest side.

Best value in town.

“BKV Danube River Ferry Service”
Reviewed July 21, 2013

BKV web sites says you can get to the Pricnse Elizetbeth dock via Metro 2 or 3. The only way to reach it by Metro is M2.

After 19 tourists waited patiently for the ferry it came and then everyone was told their weekly/monthly/daily passes were no good and they needed to purchase a ticket. The conductor only spoke Hungarian and merely waved toward an unknown spot in the distance as to where to get tickets. Frankly, the Danube is rather muddy and just did not seem worth the effort.

“Beautiful, but definitely not blue!”
Reviewed July 20, 2013

As I hummed Strauss' "Blue Danube" on riding to town from the airport, I learned from the driver that on its best days the Danube is green. During our stay, however, it was brown, no doubt due to the recent record-breaking floods. As the second longest river in Europe, the Danube is a busy waterway with barges from many lands competing with passenger ships for priority in berthing and transiting the locks. We could sit for hours watching the river traffic. And so we did on our cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam. The Danube separates Buda from Pest and is crossed by several bridges, which also provide wonderful views of the river and the city.
