“Nice boat hotel on the Donau. Really something different!”
Reviewed November 20, 2012 via mobile

If you like to stay in a hotelroom most of the day, is this not a hotel for you. This is a hotel for those that want to experience something different than what they are used to. In a good way! We stayed here two nights, one day in a "dorm" and one night in a "standard doubleroom", the "dorm" was a tiny room with three beds and not so much more.. separated shared bathroom which was shared for those that stayed in dorm. Spiderweb in the windows, not very clean. However, the "standard doubleroom" was much better. More space, and better beds. Over sea level ( the dorms below). Own bathroom included in the dorm. Well-worth the extra cost (not much more expensive than the dorms). The service was very good, extremely helpful receptionist that gladly answered any questions about Budapest. The price was average for Budapest, which means nice price:-) If you want to travel in both areas of Budapest (Buda / Pest), is the location on the Donau excellent. Transport in Budapest is excellent with buses/metro/trolleybus/tram 24/7/365,.so park your car nearby the hotel if you have one. Parking is not free but its not expensive.. You could buy 24h-tickets for all public transportations in Budapest, and it cost approx € 7 for a 48h-pass. Then you travel unlimited with all public transportations!
I recommend this hotel, i will stay here when i return to Budapest!

Staff and Management

The receptionists were friendly, though nothing exagerated, the only thing we've heard them saying in the 6 days we stayed was good morning, thank you and have a nice day. They all spoke English. They didn't give any extra information, though we didn't ask for anything either. The people in the breakfastroom were friendlier

Services

The hotel has a restaurant and there's a wireless internet connection you can use free of charge. The speed is acceptable, but there's not everywhere very good signal.

Location

The location of the hotel is convenient ON the Donau. It's in between of Buda and Pest, close to Margaret's Island and Margaret's bridge, though to reach Buda castle you need to walk about half an hour. The hotel is close to Metroline 3 station Lehel Ter.

Bedrooms

The bedroom was rather small with a more or less uncomfortable bathroom, though you have to keep in mind that it's a boat afterall.

The room was clean enough, though we found hair in the bed on arrival and there was a spiderweb on the cieling during all our stay.

The heating didn't always work well, though when we went telling the reception they gave us an electric heater for that night and the day after the heating got fixed.

When we arrived the toilet leaked a little bit, we told the reception and also this got fixed the day after.

Food

The hotel offers a breakfast included in the price of the room. The breakfast has everything a continental breakfast includes, there's also scrambled and hard boiled eggs, bacon, sausage...The breakfast was plenty and VERY nice!

We didn't use the restaurant for lunch nor diner.

Conclusion

The location, the room which was just fine in the end, the nice breakfast the good price and the fact that you stay on a boat make it worth to stay in the hotel. You should just accept that not everything is perfect, but they try their best to make you have a good time.

If we'd go back to Budapest, we'd consider to go back to the same hotel.

Room Tip: Try to get a room in the river side

After another visit to this hotel she still offers excellent value for money . yes the cabins are on the small side and the windows do not open but the air con was acceptable and the television only had CNN in English but then do we have programmes in Hungarian?. The restaurant is perfect for breakfast lots of choices and no limit on what you can eat. Coffee is perfect and lots of choices from the help yourself machine . The staff speak adequate English and are helpful. Only 8 minutes walk to the tram and bars.

Room Tip: Ask for the Danube side.

The Boat Hotel Fortuna is ON the Danube so that is a bonus but don't get romantic notions of a luxury cruise liner. It is clean and comfortable and appears to be an older cruise ship having a second lease of life tied up (bolted actually) to a wharf. As can be expected on a ship, the rooms are *very* small with beds and bathroom only. There is just enough space for your needs. However, there is plenty of room on the decks if you need to spread out.

The hotel's located a bit away from the centre of Budapest but the nearest trams are cheap, frequent, only 5 minutes walk away and the staff were very helpful in giving directions to the tram stop. (As they said, "You're getting good Danube views all the way to town!")

The boat has very poor ventilation which makes it hot and stuffy inside (it was 38 degrees Celsius when we were there). I cannot understand why they didn't open at least a couple of the small windows high above the gangway to allow a cross breeze. Security reasons probably. Maybe we were lucky but we had a three bed room which had two air conditioners and we needed to run both of them constantly to maintain a reasonable temperature. One A/C would not have coped as other reviewers have testified.

The included breakfast was standard fare - not great, not bad. The restaurant on the open top deck was excellent; even if it was gently listing to one side with the rest of the boat. We only stayed two nights but the food was good with sizable portions (the platter we ordered was enormous) and the views of the passing Danube so entertaining we ate there a second time.

In this world you get what you pay for and the Fortuna's very reasonable rates made me suspicious. We were pleasantly surprised. It's definitely not 5 star quality but the rooms are clean if small, the staff friendly and helpful and overall it was a better experience than I expected for the money. We would stay there again.

Room Tip: If possible, try to get a room with two air-conditioners when weather is going to be hot.

I have spent three nights at the end of september by the Boat Hotel Fortuna: has been very heavy and we have been hardly able to sleep at all! The room was very old and dirty, the airco useless and noisy, the personell completely useless and unprofessional! There was even a marriage party on the boat and the celebrations went over till three in the night...... all lights on and lous music and screaming....no respect for the guests and no warning in adavance! If you choose this hotel for a romantic experience on a boat, please don't make my mistake..... look for something else!!

I did not get to keep our reservation and actually stay at the Boat Hotel Fortuna but I think it's important for people to know about my experience with them. My sister and I traveled from the US to visit with another sister who live in Germany. We were then all driving with my two nephews to Budapest. My brother-in-law was in the hospital and released on Saturday. On Sunday I was afraid he was too ill to travel or to leave alone so I cancelled our reservation. My brother-in-law passed away on Monday which was to be our first night at the Boat Hotel. They could have kept our deposit of over $100 but returned it when I explained the reason for our cancellation. Zsolt Holman, the Sales Manager sent me a kind e-mail and told me that they would refund my deposit.

They went above what most businesses would do. I hope to one day be able to stay there. If I get to Budapest, I'll stay at the Boat Hotel Fortuna.

We were living in this hotel at July 2012 for five days. There is nearby many shops and good restaurants. Metro is about 1km away but there is also bus and tram-line nearby. Centrum is about 4km away from this hotel.
Hotel staff were very nice and helpful, breakfast is okay and food in restaurant called Lord Nelson was good.
Room itself was pretty small and bed were bit hard, air-condition did not cooled the room enough.
Views from the boat were nice and it was nice to sit on the deck at nights.
I would recommend this hotel sincerely to everyone who has limited budget but also want to sleep nights in good hotel :)

Room Tip: Take a room with views to the river :)
