“Fantastic apartment”
Reviewed October 14, 2011

We stayed in the apartments connected with the hotel with little garden and patio. Great for a family - we were 3 adults and a toddler and had more room than we needed. Very clean and service was also good. Location is not that central but if you are happy to walk a bit you won't have any problems getting to the sites! Plus the restaurant next door to the Hotel is fantastic so you don't need to walk to far for lunch and dinner at least.

Stunning hotel with a good location. Spent 2 nights in early October and when checking in received an upgrade to a suite. Wow...this never happens to me but it was excellent. Highly recommended and would stay again. Budapest is a hidden jewel.....better than Paris!

We recently visited Budapest for the first time to celebrate our wedding anniversary and chose to stay at the Corinthia, wanting to savour a hotel with more character. It totally fit the bill, combining a beautiful building with lovely interiors. We stayed in an Executive Room, beautifully appointed, spacious and comfortable, which gave access to the Executive Club facilities, which included quality complimentary snacks and drinks, served from early morning until 22.00 hrs. We spent time in the lovely spa which was very enjoyable.

The area around the Danube was a good 20 minute walk, or a couple of minutes on the convenient metro (buy a 24 or 72 hour transport pass which gives access to all Budapest transport). We probably discovered more interesting parts of Budapest on our walks!

Hotel is carefully renovated and with a great taste.

Spa is by far the best I have seen for central Budapest and definitely their most distinctive feature.

Rooms are spacious (I stayed on executive room) and beautifully appointed. Bed is amazing!

Breakfast is good but it could be improved, we arrived some minutes before breakfast was over and selection was rather poor (something ok for 4 or less stars but not 5stars hotel). Staff at breakfast was helpful but at busy times they did not show their best face.

We tried the Bock restaurant and the Rickshaw:

Bock: bad service experience, unattentive waiter and he did not want to charge it to the room as he said restaurant was managed separately from hotel. However when I complained to reception they said it was possible to charge it to room. Food not so good and expensive.

Rickshaw: good service but food was not exceptional (price was :-)).

I was recommended the brunch but did not try it. Bar outside (street) prepares good cocktails.

If you stay in executive room you get access to the lounge in the mezzanine, which has a nice atmosphere, complimentary finger food and wines/champagne.

Overall, an excellent choice in Budapest, and close to many good restaurants nearby that deserve better credit than the ones inside the hotel.

Room Tip: an executive room. I stayed in one with courtyard view which was very quiet but slightly dark, perha...

We have to score this hotel down based on a problem we had during our stay. This shouldn't necessarily dissuade anyone from staying since the facilities (restaurant, spa) are great and the hotel is a fantastic place to "be", and architecturally much prettier than any of those nearer the river (Sofitel etc.). However we stayed in one of their apartments, and discovered when the electricity failed that the fire escape stairs are not lit & pitch black - so not recommended with a baby or young children. The apartments are detached from the main hotel & accessed via the business centre over a walkway across the back street - so like most of Budapest not great with a pram.

Room Tip: Choose a package with breakfast (e.g. executive) - breakfast here is very good but expensive if sepa...

Stayed here for two nights in Sept 2011. The decor as you enter is fabulous, it is such a beautiful hotel, we loved it. I was travelling with family and we had two rooms, both rooms were fabulous and laid out differently. We loved the piano player in the evenings, and on our last night there was a band playing as well - all of this entertainment is free and certainly adds to the ambience. We had wonderful food at the hotel, from breakfasts to their cafe next door. Service was excellent - from the business centre to asking for fresh milk and they sent up a small carton to our room (very generous), as well as an extra tea cups etc given we were in and out of each others rooms. Location is perfect, a supermarket is across the road, shopping is right on your doorstep as are cafes, and fabulous archictecture. This was one of our favourite places to stay in Europe, mainly because of the great friendly but very professional service and quality of amenities.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
First opened in 1896 as the Grand Hotel Royal; a hub for the elite of nineteenth century society, and painstakingly restored to its original glory some hundred years later, the Corinthia Budapest – located in the heart of the city - brings together classic hotel opulence with the finest five-star luxury of modern times. While the gracious frontage, marble floors, sweeping staircase and breathtaking, six-story Atrium preserved from the original building offer glorious hints of a bygone age, the levels of comfort and convenience are all reassuringly up to date.A particular feature is the hotel’s original Royal Spa centre, with 15-metre pool, now extensively refurbished by the current owners to reflect the very best in 21st-century spa luxury while retaining the grandeur of the past. Without doubt the finest hotel in Budapest. Built in classic French Renaissance style, the Grand Royal became a beacon of luxury in the days of Emperor Franz Joseph 1. Designed as a centrepiece of Hungary’s celebrations to mark its first thousand years, the hotel’s grand-style architecture and unrivaled guest facilities were seen as state-of the art for the times. Much of the building was destroyed in the 1956 Hungarian Revolution and despite re-opening in more modest form in the 1960’s, the Grand Royal remained a shadow of its former self until the 1990’s; when new owners Corinthia Hotels gave the green light for an extensive restoration project that would retain the best of the old, while sensitively adding the new. Once restored to its original splendour, the newly named Corinthia Hotel Budapest re-opened its doors, as a five-star luxury property, in 2003. ... more   less
