Stayed here with my daughter in January 2012. This hotel represents excellent value, its location right near the Elizabeth bridge could not be bettered, all attractions are within walking distance.
The entrance is a bit off-putting but reception area is fine and rooms are large, warm, spacious, very clean and comfortable. i requested a room with river view on checking in and was given one with balcony overlooking Danube at no extra cost. Bathroom was clean and there was ample hot water.
The restaurant/breakfast area was absolutely fascinating. Breakfast was fine although coffee was a bit disappointing.
Excellent places to eat near by, try the "100 Year Old Restaurant" actually much older and with very talented violinist, double bass and key board. Food was superb. This restaurant is just off the Vaci Utca. Also try Amstell River Cafe, very good, filling, tasty meals, friendly atmosphere, cosy, open till midnight, on Parizi St, off Vaci Utca. The Cafe Central is also excellent although a little more pricy.
Would have tried the hotel restaurant if we were there for longer.
Would certainly return to this hotel.

Room Tip: River view rooms are well worth putting up with the slight traffic (and wind) noise

I almost wept when we entered the lobby area, thought I shouldn't have prepaid. They let me see 5 rooms before I was satisfied. Our room was on the 3rd floor away from the street noise. The room was spotless and comfortable. The breakfast was okay and was like 7euros.

Room Tip: There is some creepy room where they do "massages" on the 2nd floor. I almost left when I...

Easy check in. Not the most welcoming receptionist, but fine. Bargaining reduced the price 10 Euros. The room was fine; clean and spacious. Remarkable dining room (the best aspect of the hotel).

If you are looking for "honey for the money" hotel, well this is the one for you. Nothing fancy, just a simple hotel in a perfect safe location with a affordable price tag. One thing I must stress out, well actually few, small elevator (two skinny people could barely fit), also there is some serious stairs!!! Front entrance is all stairs ( no elevator in that area) so if u have heavy bags, you are going to drag them all the way to the top. Besides that, hotel is clean, perfectly located to the touristy spots, beds are very small, one computer in the lobby with internet access. Once again nothing fancy, simple hotel.

My boyfriend booked this hotel as a deal thorough an airline as a birthday present.
We stayed here for a few nights so that we could explore the city.
Hotel is in a very good location, not far from the river and is very close to the main shopping streets and access to other attractions in the city.
Breakfast was served downstairs in the basement but was also the restaurant next door.
There was a fairly good variety and was happy with what we had.
Hotel room was out the back and had to cross a courtyard area to get to it.
The only thing that i didn't like was that it was dark especially at night and there was no light so couldn't see if any one was there and could properly see where to put the card / key in the door.

The City Hotel Matyas is one of the best things we faced during our 4 day visit to Budapest! Excellent staff speaking good English, wonderful breakfast at one of local must-visit-restaurants, best location, value for money! If you are looking for budget accomodation which can also provide you with the best location in the city - the City Hotel Matyas is probably the only one you need to choose! Special thank you to all receptionists - we've met many during our stay - they do their best! You may ask them for any help - and they are always ready to assist with any advice or immediate action!:)

Room Tip: Rooms on the 1st floor have an access to free wi-fi (but it's available in the lobby anyway)

The location and price are great enough that I've stayed here 2 out of 8 trips to Budapest. Around the corner from the pedestrian street and lots of shopping, concerts at St. Micheal's, restaurants and the big indoor market. Easy walk along the river to the Buda side to enjoy those sights and baths. Interesting old building retro-fitted into a hotel. The lobby is up one flight of stairs from the street. Some rooms have elevator access and some don't. The halls can be like a maze with steps up and down and over and around. It gives the place "character". Many rooms face an indoor courtyard that has great potential but currently is stark. The breakfast buffet was wonderful but priced high. I squirreled away bread & cheese and fruit for lunch. There are several great pastry shops nearby. The staff was friendly and helpful and many spoke English. Wi-fi available. Nothing fancy but clean, convenient and a great value. I'll stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with elevator access if that is important to you.
