Staying at the Gellert hotel we figured the most interesting way to the castle would go straight over the Gellert Hill. The route up wasn't too long for a casual stroll and the journey offered many opportunities for great views and photos. Up on the hill you get to really understand the scale of the statue. It's huge! Pro tip: you can find a small kiosk on top of the hill serving some wine and refreshments!
Take some time while at there: there's a world war era fortress and a museum bunker on top of the hill, just behind the statue.
The road down on the other side featured more park trails leading almost at the base of the Castle Hill.
