Owner description: The best views of Budapest and the Danube River are from this hill, which also features the imposing fortress, the Citadella, at its summit.

If you would like to watch intire Budapest from above, and especially if you love to shoot panormic photos - You just can't miss this one. Totally free and totally amazing.
Since the Metro 4 is open, it's very easy to get there - Just take it to Moricz Zsigmond Korter station, and than get on bus no. 27 up to the Citadella. Then you have a 3 minutes walking for this amazing view.
I recommend to go there twice - once in day light, and the other after dark, when you get to see the whole city of lights. Just remember that the bus frequency is lower at night, and you just might wait for 0-25 minutes for the next one.

Take the green trail that starts close to the Gellert hotel. Go ahead and you will have the best Budapest panorama :)

Walked up Gellert hill, it was steep but worth it. You can take a bus but that's cheating lol. There is a lovely restaurant at the top which served tasty food. The view from the restaurant terrace was lovely. There are craft stalls and a museum also.

Nearing the end of our six days in Budapest, we decided to walk up Gellert Hill. Reviews had said it was a gentle hike- not true.
Yes, there are many stopping places, and boy do you need them. Only an athlete could manage the top in one go !!!
Having said that, the views on the ascent are amazing and when you reach the top, there you are in front of the statue which you clearly see from the Pest side of the city. Worth the effort, but only if you are relatively fit. Otherwise take the bus which approaches from the other side.

We headed here on our first day in Budapest, thinking it would use up a few hours until evening time. None of the guide books really helped explain how you get to the top of the hill so we took the tram to the bottom of the hill and walked up. Well, it's a loooooong walk. When you get to the top there are great views over the city, there's quite an impressive looking statue and unfortunately we couldn't work out how to get into the citadella, if you even can, I still don't know.

And then you have to walk all the way back down again. Apparently there's a bus that goes to the top of the hill from somewhere and probably comes back down again from somewhere but of course, no guidance anywhere of how this might happen.

If I have one complaint about Budapest, it's that they're just not well geared for tourists who might not know which bus/tram you need to get to go somewhere. Compare with somewhere like Prague which has it nailed.

I probably sound grumpy, but I did see a lot of other things in Budapest that were so much better than this, and I really don't think it's worth the effort unless you fancy a bit of hill-walking or you work out how to get there some other way.
