I visited this zoo as a child and now I returned as an adult and I was sorry to see that the way they treat animals hasn't really changed. Cages and places for animals are smalls! Way too small :( Animals are visibly sad. As a Hungarian kid, I visited several zoos in the country and 10-15 years ago all zoos in Hungary were like this or even smaller cages. However, they changed over the years. It worths to see the zoo in Gyor for example. The animals has nice big places and in the past years I have never felt that the animals are particularly sad there. In Budapest, those poor kangaroos and polar bears were seemingly prefer suicide...I was close to crying seeing them so miserable. Rhinos had really tiny place and hippos too. Giraffes, camels and zebras have zero chance for a run...not even a very lazy run. Pools for water animals are also miserably tiny, even for big seals and polar bears. Polar bears are not designed for 40 degrees Hungarian summer! It's cruel to keep them in these condition and the same goes for penguins.
The zoo is good value for money considering the number of species there...but I don't want to support keeping animals in these circumstances :( In the future I'll rather pay more for Western-European zoos and countryside zoos in Hungary, for example the one in Gyor. I'm deeply sorry to see the miserably closed animals in Budapest zoo.
