The Zoo is fairly large and varied, with a nice variety of animals, ordered according to their continent of origin.

There is little English in the signs throughout, but it's isn't hard to get along and understand where's what using the picture-filled map.
The only problem is the amount of people, and especially young, noisy children running around throughout the zoo and they can prove to be an annoyance of sorts, especially when the place feels overcrowded as it is.

And still, there is a large range of animals to observe and a visit can certainly fill a few hours of exploring, a walking distance from the Heroes's Square.

This was my second visit to the zoo, the last one being made some 7 years ago and in the Summer. During that visit there were more animals outside, but on this visit the temperature had dropped, and many of them had been moved inside to their Winter quarters. I found that the indoor quarters were clean and apparently well maintained. Food for the animals / birds /. insects appeared to be adequate and fresh. Now I know that not everyone agrees with some animals being kept in zoos, but to their credit, this zoo has an active, captive breeding programme and amongst their successes is the rare Persian leopard, the 7th offspring since 2003 arriving a few months ago. Other success are giraffes, elephants, Asiatic lions and the endangered Siberian tiger. In general, the zoo is well laid out with tarmac paths and the Magic Mountain which houses a number of general exhibitions and creatures appears to have a lift available to get between the different floors, although I didn't use them. One small downside might be if you don't speak Hungarian. The free guide to the layout of the zoo is available in English at least, the name labels for the different species normally give the English name too, but the long information boards were only in Hungarian (not unreasonable perhaps as this is Hungary).
Finally the catering. The only catering I actually tried was the kürtőskalács being made at a stand within the zoo. The price (900 HUF) was about what this particular company normally charge, but they can be bought quite a bit cheaper elsewhere.

I have visited many zooes all over the world but this one is one of the best! it is not a modern zoo but a magical one. some of the animals are sheltered in old magnificent buildings. The zoo is well maintained ,clean and green ,all kind of animals but i specially liked the lake flooded with avariety of birds.

I do not generaly go to zoos, but it was free in Budapest with Budapest card.

They have animals from all around the world. Animals were very well looked after.

The zoo had beautiful architectural value. The mosque - looking blue elephant house,

the art deco botanical garden etc.

The highlight of the zoo was touching and feeding animals (baby goats, camels) and

walking into a real Rock activity center.

I love Zoo's. I have been to London Zoo, Prague Zoo and now Budapest Zoo.
They have every animal you might want from a Zoo. Polar Bears, anacondas, elephants, giraffes, tigers and an Orang-utan! Good zoo!
Oh, and try and go on a day that isn't a public holiday!! School boy error!
