The Citadel is an excellent panoramic observation point, due to its location on Gellert Hill, which is why it was nicknamed "the Budapest Eye". The Citadel was designed by the Habsburg monarchy for military purposes, to repel attempts of rebellion after 1848 and played an important role in WW II as well. Currently, there are several museums and exhibitions from which some can be seen without fee.

We were in a rental car. There is very limited parking and you will need coins to pay at the pay station. However, regardless of how you get here, it's definitely worth the trip. The view of Budapest is incredible.

Walking up to the Citadel you can choose slow uphill or the stairs which are steep. We choose slow uphill having just had knee surgery. The views are amazing but I found better options for views throughout Budapest. Just ok.

Steep climb and you can get decent views of the city but there are better options.. Do visit if you have the time.

In walking up to the Citadel you get to choose between slow uphill switchbacks or steep stairs. Either way once you get to the top you are rewarded with several great views of the city.
